Location: Savannah, Tennessee | I am starting my 12 year old gelding on monthly Adequan IM injections for prevention. He currently has no joint issues, has been on oral joint supplements for prevention in the past. Will I need to start with the loading dose? I'd love to hear personal experiences. The vet said with no joint problems I could just start with monthly injections. However, I have also read online that it is just a waste of money without the loading dose.

Location: Here | Absolutely you do a loading dose. Because if you don't you might as well don't do it. You have to get the blood levels up and then maintain them |

| It's actually more effective to do the loading dose 2x a year and not monthly. Monthly has not shown any benefit. |

? Do you have a link on this? I have used it for over 12 years this way with great results and everything I have read on the research has proven the once every 21 days. I would love to learn more |

I was actually told this by Several of the vets I use. They said they got the info and research from the manufacturer. It's approved and labeled for 7 shot series. Not monthly. |

Location: Savannah, Tennessee | Thank you for the replies. I did the first shot yesterday and will go ahead and do the full loading dose, and then go from there to decide about monthly or doing the 7 shot series once or twice a year. |

So I am continuing on with once a month, as recommended by her. She's a younger vet and very up-to-date, totally trust her. Come to think of it, I've been meaning to email the other vet that I have used (one of the best in the region) and see what his reponse is. So far, he's always agreed with my vet I use here.
To the OP: YES you need to do a loading dose, regardless.

Then we have Dr Schell at curost who doesn't really think we need ANy of the shots in the first place if you manage the inflammation. My horse with hock arthritis, coffin joint arthritis and broken navicular bone May 1 has been on curost total support for 45 days and made a rodeo run today and was 100 percent sound when it was over. Normally he runs on previcox and pentosan etc. took him off just to see. |

Location: Here | I went to the manufacturer as you suggested and yes the directions have changed since I read it last. Wow Studies show that administering Adequan®i.m. as recommended—500 mg intramuscularly once every four days for 28 days or seven treatments—better than results with four-injection series.* http://www.adequan.com/recommended_dosage.aspx
http://www.adequan.com/clinical_studies.aspx
I have been sorta doing this with one of my older mares, just because it seems to work. I had been doing a box every 4 days then she would get really good and about 3 months later I would need to do it again. So I will continue. Thanks for the heads up that this has changed

Got a response from my other vet.
He said to do the loading dose in the spring, and then every month thereafter. |
