 I Want a "MAN"
Location: MD | I may blanket a horse that I intend to haul this winter. I was going to do a fleece blanket and then possibly a stable blanket with a belly band and then a heavy duty turnout blanket on top with a neck cover. Is this too much? I live in Maryland. Our winters can be pretty cold I think lol. What is your blanketing schedule? |

Location: WI | I have this from Weatherbeeta, best blanket EVER! They are spendy, but worth it! Used it last winter and still looks new.

| Both of mine just have weatherbetta Freestyle medium to heavy turnout blankets, then if its after a race and they are sweaty, we put the coolers on under the blanket to keep them from getting chilly (we have a stock trailer).
Just the one blanket was enough for ours, and they didn't grow much of a winter coat (a little fuzz, but nothing that a day of shedding didn't take care of). |

Location: Kansas | I have a saxon, it's not bad....but I'd like a heavy weight waterproof mesh type of blanket. I've seen one before...and want one but haven't been able to find one. |

Location: North Dakota | I used a midweight high neck no-name blanket last year and when it got farther into the negatives we put a fleece sheet underneath. I plan on doing the same this year for both my horses except the new blanket will have a neck cover. A fleece sheet, stable sheet, and heavyweight would definitely be too much. MOST horses need no blanket at all and it would probably die of heat stroke with that many blankets. Again I'd recommend a nice midweight with a fleece you can add when it gets really cold.

Location: MD | We have a tough 1, a Saxon, and a weatherbeeta. The Saxon is the oldest at 3 years and has taken a beating and finally has a couple little tears nothing I can put a finger through though. My boys think it's cute to bite and pull at their blankets.
My favorite is the tough 1 for the fit, adjustability, and of course fancy colors:) |

Location: Louisiana | My favorite stable blanket is a Relentless with a belly band that I've had about 5 years. The straps are elastic and velrco a cross the back. Very convenient and secure. It just doesn't really get cold enough down here for it. This year I plan on just using a slinky. |

I agree. I love mine. My guy was pretty rough on his and it held up great. Got it washed and it looks like new. |

My gelding destroyed his tough 1 blanket in one winter. And by destroyed I mean shredded into one thousand pieces. It didn't hold up enough, and he is turned out alone. Just my experience with them. |

Location: Northwest | Kensington Platinum blankets are my very favorite. HIGH quality, high denier, great fit. I live in E WA and it can get pretty cold but Midweight blankets are enough for mine except on my old gelding who doesn't grow any hair whatsoever. I will throw a fleece under his blanket when it gets below 15 degrees. |

| If your water buckets do not freeze I wouldn't even think of putting a blanket on a horse that is stalled up with 1-2 hour turnout. If up to 8 hour turnout would consider a med blanket while outside.
Mother Nature knows how to fluff a horses hair to keep them warm when dry and horses thrive on 30-40 degree weather ... hay is the internal furnace to keep a horse warm ..
If heavily blanketed ... who is there to pull the blankets off if temperature goes above 50 degrees?? .. also when blanketing horses is discussed I never hear anyone mention washing the blankets over the 4-5-6 months of wearing them ... lol
I know my stud horse liked it when bathing was infrequent in the winter months when I squirted him with some POLO DOUBLE BLACK to make the ladies smile at him... lol

Thank you for the reminder. Mine will be in 30-40 and since we've seen 115 this summer---it seems pretty darn cold! I was temped to get like a "windbreaker jacket" type blanket for him even though I KNOW he doesn't need one. I will resist buying him something!!!!! |
