Location: Texas | Ok I have a horse on Bute bc his feet are bothering him.
Long story short: farrier was doing his hooves and quicked him (he has really shallow feet) farrier is great so plz no bashing him) so farrier brought me Bute - 2 tablets for 5 days and tomorrow is his last day on Bute but I feel like he needs to be on it longer. So what I was wondering is if I can just by Bute at the feed store or if I have to get it from the vet?? |

Location: Florida.. | Vet but I think you need to realize it can tear up your horses stomach .I agree give him bute for it but only 1 gram a day and few days only for that issue.. it usually doesnt take that long imho.. |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | you will have to get it from a Vet. You can get buteless at a feed store and or B-L solutions. Try Pouring iodine into the nail hole. |

Yep. This. 2 grams of bute for 5 days is asking for trouble. |

| You may want to try magic cushion, this is a packing that helps draw inflammation out of the feet, a little goes a long way, you can get this at most tack stores.
As for bute, I would switch to banamine and give a half dose, as banamine tends to work better on feet (this is as per my vet). It is a smooth muscle relaxant along with an antiinflammatory. Banamine helps relax the blood vessels in the feet therefore reduces the pressure in the feet.
Both drugs you have to get from the vet.
If you are worried about ulcers, you can ask your vet about previcoxx, it isn't as potent as bute, as it only works on one (cox 2) inflammatory pathway whereas but works on both cox 1 and 2 pathways. There are many people who have success with it, I used it for a hoof abscess and I seen results. Previcoxx is easier on the gut |

| 8 buffered aspirin aren't to bad for pain. I would t want to give them too terribly many days in a row. |

| Am I the only one who sees a problem with a farrier providing a client with a prescription only medication??? Having said that I would rather use previcox for this issue if it were my horse since it can safely be given for 2 weeks consecutively. Or longer but its labeled for 14 days |

No I don't see a problem with it! If I did then I would've told him no. And no he does not just carry meds around with him to give to his clients. We are great friends and he asked if I had any and since I didn't he brought me some. I asked for noz bashing my farrier- so if You don't have something nice to say then plz don't say it at all |

| Just saying that if your farrier provided you bute, your horse has a reaction, then he is practicing medicine without a license. Wasn't bashing him personally. |

Location: Alabama | I would talk to my vet & see what other options were, such as previcox. Bute in that large of a dose over a period of more than a few days can he hell on ones stomach... i would suggest getting some ulcer guard or aloe vera juice to help coat the stomach....
i worked for a vet & technically a farrier should not be distributing it, but i have a few tubes in my barn for me to use as needed. |

Location: Florida.. | it was tongue in cheek. but the way you wrote it sounded like he regularly gave bute to his clients horses..wasnt how you meant it. not bashing him as a person.... just found it odd

Location: North Dakota | I find it odd that people don't have bute/banamine and own a horse-HOWEVER-If I were you I would wait and see how he is.......We had a horse quicked just last week-next day he was miserable-gave him 3 more days and he's right as rain! No bute either. IF the horse isn't better after a couple more days, THEN give your vet a call and see if they can help you out. |

Location: mi | I second the magic cushion. That is what your farrier should have in his truck for just such a situation. It works wonders in about 24 hours. |

And if he needs pain meds still, get some previcoxx (firocoxib)
