Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | My geldings mane is really really long and thick. It goes down past his shoulder. It gets sooo tangled. Like I can get all the knots out and 5 minutes later it's knotted up agin. I started keeping it in tight braids and take it down a couple times a week and wash and condition it and braids it back but someone told me that can cause it to break. I'm not going to cut it because it's too pretty but is there something else I can do to help it |

Location: North Dakota | If you REALLY want to protect it, I've also seen where people take those braids and fold them then wrap them in vetwrap. There's a youtube video with a pretty friesian. I'm at work so can't look it up. |

Location: PNW | I do a combination of things. At races, I always braid before a run so that my reins don't rip any out.
At home, they stay braided in loose braids - I also use the cowboy magic gel detangler stuff.
When he gets his breaks from hauling and there's no other horses around to laugh at him, I braid it and then tie it up ALMOST like hunter braids, but a lot looser and about 4 inches long, instead of the little nubbies. |

Location: Kansas | I actually use to wash, rub coconut oil through it, braid it and wrap in vet wrap. Worked for me.....now I have a gelding that likes to rub certain parts of his mane off with the hay ring. I have yet to find a solution to prevent this from happening. |

That is the worst thing. My old mare would stick her head through the bars of her pen and rubbed out a huge chunk in the middle of her mane. It was really long too so I was upset! |

Location: Illinois | I wash mine once every 2 weeks and just saturate it in coconut oil then braid it. The oil keeps it moist in the braids and I don't have much breakage. My braids still look only 2-3 days old after 2 weeks. I bag my tail though because even braided it drags the ground. It grows like 2" a month when its bagged and oiled until it drags about 4" and then it stops growing. Its just always bagged now. Its all very messy and I do rinse the braids a bit before a barrel race just so it doesn't look so greasy. |

it's horrible, I roached it....and he still manages to do it. I will get him a darn hood for his winter blanket this year so he doesn't do that! |

That's why I rinse mine off before I haul to a barrel race. Who cares if its dirty when you're just riding at home? |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | I HAVE to ask: What is the point of having a mane and/or tail so long you can't just "leave it loose"? I just don't understand the attraction. For people that like the "long flowing manes", it kind of defeats the purpose if it is braided 24/7/ |

Probably should have considered the fact that I have four kids now before I ended up with two Barbie horses to deal with. The first is my 6 yr old mare...Her's is really bad to tangle no matter what if I don't keep it braided. I try to take it down once a week and wash it.
The second is my 3 yr old gelding. His mane has a totally different texture than the mare's. It's much softer and less prone to tangle. I still keep it braided so that just to cut out extra time in the evenings getting ready to ride. I use EQ Solutions to bathe them and wash manes and tails. Cowboy Magic detangler and finger comb....rarely ever do I use a brush on manes and tails.

Mine isn't long and flowing and beautiful really. I'd say it's like 9 inches long, but THICK and has the same texture as African American hair. If I don't keep it up, it gets horrific knots and/or pulled out on various things. I would roach it, but he's the first horse I've had that actually HAS a mane, so I can't. It's against my moral code. Lol |

Location: on my horse | I use mane and tail spray in detangler, it's not super expensive and not as messy as cowboy magic of coconut oil and doesn't leave a residue, my mare's mane is about approaching 3' long and would knot easily until I started this, she has an afro tail as well and this stuff keeps it knot free. |
