So the NFR is in December...new PRCA year starts October 1st. I think contestants still have to enter the NFR as they would any other rodeo? I know I had a friend that missed books for Houston after qualifying...and he didn't get to go. What if PRCA implemented this new rule change now... not allowing the ERA athletes to purchase their cards on Oct.1st in order to enter for the NFR? Does anyone here have any clue as to how entering up for the NFR would go...I have some friends that are finalist...I guess I could ask...I just had that thought run across my mind.

Ya know what I hope happens? I hope all these ASSociations kill themselves off and leave us with what we started with. Pure Rodeo.

I just SO look forward to watching these athletes compete every year at the finals....all of them...not just the barrel racers so I hadn't thought that the fact that the fact that the PRCA implemented this new rule meant that a lot of those athletes wouldn't be able to go to the finals in December....assuming that you have to be PRCA cardholder to compete in the NFR

It would be very disappointing to me as a fan to not be able to see all of my favorites at the NFR, the people we have followed and cheered for all year long.

Very good question to bring up.

2015 Cards do not expire until 12/31/15 so they will still be able to compete until then.

Is this new? I thought, we as WPRA members, had to have a new card bought before then to enter rodeos after Oct. 1st?

Me too.... When I started watching rodeo 45 years ago... We had two places to GO see rodeo events. Rolla Saddle Club Arena and Reah Church Road Arena. We cheered just as loud for those local people we knew as anyone does today for people they will never meet. Some people think this could kill rodeo... BS!!! Rodeo (like Rock&Roll) will never die as long as we have horses.
As long as we have horses, someone will want to ride them. (Well... There's only a limited number of things you can do while sitting on a horse)...
I remember the baseball strike and the hit they took from the people that WORK for their dollar and paid to go watch a game. We never stopped playing baseball at home, but we stopped going to the games and paying them. After many years, with the help of network TV, Professional Baseball overcame such an event. Can Professional Rodeo do the same?

I wondered about that yesterday (the expiration time) so thanks for posting this info.

In regards to the other, I suspect the ERA through its affected members are getting ready to file a suit that includes a request for injunctive relief to keep the new by-laws from taking effect until a ruling can be made on whether or not they are legal to do so.  Usually injunctions (which are court orders prohibiting a party from doing a certain act) maintain the status quo as it was between the parties before the legal issue came into play.  So you typically ask that things be ordered to stay the same until the issue of whether the change can be implemented or not.  Likewise, the two parties might mediate an agreement on how to go forward while things are being hammered out in the interm until a settlement or court judgment can be reached.

This is from the ERA website they also post it to their facebook today.

BOERNE, TX (September 24, 2015) – Although the ERA is disappointed in the recent decisions of PRCA leadership, the ERA is working to ensure that the top rodeo athletes in the world will continue to participate at professional rodeos across the country.

The ERA and its athletes are committed to the sport of rodeo, its fans, and are determined to grow the sport. They want to assure fans that these newest bylaws will not affect in anyway the vision of the ERA and making rodeo better for future generations.

As mentioned in a September 15th ERA Athlete announcement, the ERA Tour will be the athlete’s primary focus for their 2016 rodeo seasons. However, they want to reassure fans that they will still be competing at traditional rodeo events during the 2016 season, but have elected to not participate in other tour-formatted events.

Their focus and commitment is fueled by their desire to leave the sport better than they found it. For the first time in rodeo history, the sport of rodeo and its top athletes will be showcased on a national stage with ERA’s partnership with FOX Sports. As is the case with other professional sports, this increased exposure will enhance the sport and its participation at all levels. Ultimately providing more opportunities for current and future rodeo athletes.

Information about the 2016 tour including the announcement of the tour roster, event dates and details on the qualification system will be coming soon and will be released

Ummm, I remember as a kid watching the 8-10th round on TV and that was back before cable was even talked about. ( Man, am I old!) I am talking about when the NFR was held in Oklahoma.

I can't wait for the depositions concerning what it takes to be an Elite athlete.  Should be entertaining.

Well its like someone said earlier....if it was just about showcasing the top athletes of the sport at the time then they would just capitalize on the champions challenges...but this is about money. They want to be able to compete and win and then as owners pocket any profit that the association brings in as well.....its like one of those non-profits that pays its board members a ton of money. I'll tell you this...I am not knocking the ERA...in fact I like the options. I'll enter my first American Qualifier next year, and I'll go to my normal PRCA rodeos, and I'll enjoy the local UPRA rodeos we have, and I'll go to all the added money races I can afford to hit in between...keep my horses in shape at the local jackpots......and I am sure that one day if there is a qualification system set out for the ERA that I will try and do that too. I wish it didn't have to be a ****ing contest between everyone. Options are good. I will always love watching everyone compete at the NFR and the American and the BBR finals, and the WPRA finals and the UPRA finals hahahaha...and that is not going to change. If its on TV then I am going to watch it and if I can participate then I am going to try it. As far as the reason the ERA was set up...PR says its about growing the sport....its not, its about growing wallets...and I am ok with that honestly...but its hard to have to let go of tradition sometimes. And having some of those people at the finals every year has become a tradition for me and a lot of people.

The A bothers me. It's grammatically redundant. "Hi, I'm _____ and I'm an Elite Rodeo Athletes athlete." Ugh my ears.
