With check in day a whopping 9 days away... did anyone notice the lack of entries this year?! I think i saw somewhere around 795 in open. It's crazy how much they have declined over the past couple years.... i figured with the switch from Augusta to Perry, they would've taken off!
But i know it is very hard to get off a week from work, I'm just blessed that my bosses sponsor me or it would not be doable AT ALL!
What day is everyone heading down? Where are ya'll coming from? I think we are heading down early Saturday am just so we can get set up and hopefully avoid the major rush.
Also, did ya'll notice they added almost an entire day of exhibitions? (Sunday!! $5 each!) i was pumped about that...since this is the first year i didn't spring for the "expensive exhibition" and enter the 21 race.

Good luck and safe travels to everyone making the trip!

I'll leave from MD on Friday, stay over at a friend's in SC Friday night and come the rest of the way Saturday. I'll get there late enough to miss the crowd. I was happy to see exhibitions again. The last time they had them was 2011. I'll run late Tuesday and Thursday nights.

The NBHA is dying as people are tired of getting ripped off along with their district directors. Texas went from over 1100 entries to lucky to less then we get for a good 5-D open jackpot show.

They need to start on moday that long week is a killer, for my business, i have to pay someone to,take my place. i have seen them run over 700 in a day at lexington va. I had horse problems last year and needed a wild card not gonna pay 300.00 for on and then pay entry fees and all went up. Camper fee. Shorten time and on sat the finals needs to start at 10:00 am be done by 2:00. I havent gone as much in the last several years cause of health reasons and my husband was house bound before that, and i couldnot get a caretaker when it came down to time. I am older now and have a young horse who is not competitive. I had to make a dicision. No go. 300.00 diesel, camping fee, eating for 8 days food and dining 300.00. add it up. And the cost paying someone to stand up front and answer the phone and be dumb 500.00. Loss of business 3000.00

A couple years ago it was over 1000, last year it was close to 900 if not over 900.  This seems to be the lowest since we started going.  I think it was 795 but there will be some late entries (you can pay a double entry fee after the deadline and still run but there are only usually 5 or 6)

I always enjoy the week but I do agree the payout needs to be better.  It is the best thing we have going on the East coast though.  Out west there are so many other good organizations.  Here there is only Prorodeo, NBHA and a few IBRA's  but the district IBRA show closest to us is not run well (or had serious problems anyway when it started)  I won't go back.  Also it looked like the National IBRA show was tiny, less than 500 from what I read.

We will have fun no matter what.  Some years they win money, other years they don't, but it's usually a good time.

By the way!!!  My brother has a display he does at the NBHA Florida state show.  He wrote the program and it displays an Unofficial placeing that is current per rider.  He did it at the Perry GA show and it was very popular, so he is going back for the Open.  If you see it and like it...tell them!!!

I promise you will like it.  It lists the current rider, the current leader and the top 26 in each division and changes with each rider.  Plus there is a touch screen you can go to and type in the rider number and it will show you what they ran in each go round.

It will be at the end past the 3rd barrel!

I don't think that's it Youth World is unreal at Perry which seems to what draws the crowd.

I have qualified a couple times, but have decided not to go, because I heard the same thing as someone mentioned above. They "hundred-dollar" you half to death every time you turn around and, since I haven't been competitive enough to know I would be in the big 1D money, I just can't go spend that much in a week for what would only be a fun week. I would go if everything was going to be reasonably priced. I disagree about location being the biggest factor. I think the costs once you get there have been a bigger factor.

The argument about moving always comes up but it really is the only big show in the wast. Centrally lovated has the BBR, G&G, PAC WEST and others plus big futurities and big money jackpots. All we got is NBHA! Changing location west would drop numbers because of other competition companies.

I love going. I've been to open every year since it moved to perry. Went to youth world 2007-2012. I know it's expensive.... Believe me I know. I'm taking 3 horses and I know I won't win my money back but I love the experience. This is my vacation for the year. I don't do anything else besides maybe go to the beach for the afternoon a few times a year. I don't even go to 3 day barrel races anymore except maybe twice a year. I'm only 4.5 hours from Perry so if I was further I might not go as much but Perry is a great place.

I also just think at the youth word parents will spend for there kids. But this is am election year and is messes withnthe economy a little. When it was at augusta it was small a couple of times. I think when economy is good the extra money is there and when economy is bad people not gonna spend.

IBRA Nationals show was the same way last year. I don't think they are as "big" as NBHA yet, especially in the western states (as in they don't even have any shows).

I ran last year and had a blast. I think there were almost 400 in the open. It was very well run, and the facility is fantastic.

I didn't do much this year running wise as work kept me very busy, and I picked up a colt. However, I did see that someone broke the arena record this year at Nationals. I think IBRA will continue to grow as (at least in Indiana) it is run pretty well and has decent year end awards. I know that varies from state to state, and I think Indiana is one of the biggest.

I will definitely agree with the cost vs payout factor here.... They (NBHA) are gonna have to do SOMETHING or the numbers will continually drop...sadly
I, too, use this week as my vacation. And to catch up with the friends I've made while camping in previous years. So i really look forward to it every year. The facility is BEAUTIFUL and there's other things to do if you like to go exploring on your "not running" days.
I also agree too, that with such low numbers they COULD shorten up the week and probably wrap it all up within about 4 days...which im sure my bank account would appreciate me working those extra few days! lol
Anywho, hope everyone has safe travels!! See you in about a week!!
