Had our mares hocks injected yesterday. Vet said they were extremely dry. I asked if that could be part of her gate issue. He said no it's more than likely mental horse isn't smart like that, he said hocks hocks would make them run up the wall or not finish turns. But not refuse to go in at gate. Any thoughts on this ?

I'd say any sort of pain issue is a culprit for gate problems, ALONG WITH the problems your vet mentioned.

Hope it improves!

We use different vets for different issues. One for colic, one for teeth (if Casey isnt available), one for injections, one for lameness exams, and one for diagnostic. The vets we use for injections are racetrack vets that inject a million horses a year (exaggeration lol) and that do a lot of cutting and reining horses. They will tell you that having a horse that is chronically sore ANYWHERE will show anticipation before any competition event at some point in time...and then cause other problems on top of that from stress whether it be weight loss, ulcers, aggresiveness to other horses, lethargy, over-compensation causing other injuries....ANY vet that tells you a horse isn't smart enought to know when or what makes him more sore is an IDIOT...if they are smart enough to know to run from a halter then they are smart enough to know that walking down that alley is the constant to the pain that they will soon feel in the arena.

I call BS too-might be a good vet but no experience with timed events...it may take your horse a few pain free trips into the arena to realize things aren't going to hurt but you can bet the farm those gate issues are sure going to get better!!

And if things DONT get better after a few trips with the injections then look to a good Chiropractor or Massage Therapist and do a round of and Ulcer Treatment. Sometimes if something has been wrong in one area long enough it will lead to other issues. Not wanting to get on the hocks mean the horse is using itself in a different way to avoid that, maybe a less correct way, that could put the horse "out" somewhere. And the stress and anticipation of it could lead to Ulcers.

Absolutely. Scared to use that vet! It's basic psychology. Any animal human or not will LEARN to associate going in a gate with a run and thus pain if it indeed has it. Scarey. Kind of like the vet on here that prescribed a 4x normal dose of previcox. Holy crud!

Alright I will try a different vet if we still have issues. If she does I think I'm loading up and heading south to Dr Honnas I have heard great things about him. Unless I can locate one that's real good closer

It's sheer common sense.

If it hurts the horse to go into the arena and run barrels, why would it want to go in at all?

Obsolutely sore hocks can make one gate sour.

That's not even some special "horse sense", it's COMMON sense!

Pain is the underlying problem in the majority of alley sour horses. If it hurts, they are going to try to avoid it...!

Our older gelding has very dry hocks and needs to be injected every 8 to 9 months.  There are two indicators that he needs to be done -- (1) his turns will become more V shaped as opposed to the perfectly round turns he has when he is not hurting. (2) He will begin to get trashy at the gate and it will become progressively worse if he is not injected.  He is not a stupid horse  - he associates pain with running and he does not want to run when he hurts, thus the gate issues.  He is too honest to refuse to work or run up the fence but he will let you know that he is not comfortable.

Yep. Mine won't refute the gate, or not work. His times will be slightly off. But his big tell tell is he will sit back HARD at the trailer. When he's start that up, we go ahead and make an appt bc there is SOMETHING hurting him. Fix the problem, and it has been anywhere from new saddle didn't fit to needing injections, and he's fine again. Tell me they aren't smart ;)
