I know human siblings are all basically different. Are horses usually the same way?

When you breed your mare to an outside stud...do you stick with one that worked well for you in the past or do you mix it up (and i'm talking in the early years of breeding your mare because it can take several years before you know if the cross worked).

If you had an older mare, and one cross worked well, would that be the stud you continue to breed to even though you may only have a short number of more foals due to the mare's age?

I have 3 that are full brother and sister. Two geldings, and the one mare. All 3 different, all three very talented but i.e. the mare exceeds in barrels, the one older gelding exceeds in roping (although I did barrels and poles on him also) and then the other doesn't necessary "exceed" but he does the barrels, poles roping. Not really for sure which he enjoys the most out side of being a "diva". Seriously.. I have won money on him in barrels and roping but I know he will never be a 1D horse. He has placed in the 1D Seniors, but small class and he usually places in the 2D/3D. But I love him in spite of all he has put me through. The mare loves the roping part and if I knew what I was doing she would probably cut also. When you heel on her you had better be prepared to make that corning cause she is not waiting on you. Goes also when she runs barrels. She goes in there 90 and you think she's not going to slow down, but she does at the last second. So to answer you question in my opinion even though they would be full siblings they would still be different. If they excel then I would stick with it. That's why I did cause I like what they all brought to the table.

Early years of a broodmare you may experiment around a little to see what you get but once a mare gets some age I would sure want to go with what has proven itself as a good cross.

My 14 year old gelding and 12 year old mare are full siblings, nothing a like in build other than big and color. In the gelding the little cow they have on their paper way back comes out big time on cows and on the mare it comes out in working the turns on barrels. Both however are super minded, showed the gelding down the fence the first time as a 4 year old, he had hit his head or something on the first turn back and on the second turn on the fence I realized his browband was now his noseband and his snaffle was his chinstrap. I started to panic then realized he wasn't worried and was still locked on the cow, we got her circled up both ways and finished our run with a 71 and more importantly both of us safe. The mare I showed in a WP walk/jog schooling show the 6th time she ever had a saddle on her. Tucker's motivation is he is lazy, he wants to do it right the first time because he has a 3drill limit...after 3 he realizes he is having to work his butt off because you can't get it, LOL!! The mare will drill till she falls over, she is an absolute over achiever, the kind that gets every part of the bridle in her mouth on the way to the bit.
Then I have their half sibling, out of the same mare but a change in sires. She is a highwire act. Bi-polar/ADHD yet also super intelligent. Super talented physically but hot and can be hard to ride, quick footed, quick tempered, butterflies are scary. Her saving grace is that she has more work ethic in her right hind sesmoid than any horse I've ever known and more guts and grit than ten Grizzly Bears. My brother has her full brother and he is a born kids horse.

I have full siblings. I loved my mare so much that when I saw she had a full sibling I had to buy him. They are pretty much the same 'person' however, the gelding is much more immature and 'boyish' my mare is very 'professional' but that also comes with age, LOL

He is 3, my mare is 11 both by Saintly Fellow

I have had several full siblings and they are rarely anything alike. Even in looks when the stud and mare look similar. One will be thicker or taller. One may be friendly, the other rather be left alone.

My mare has a full sibling that's a gelding. He is built nothing like her. He's taller and has more of a leggy, race type build like the dam. My mare is short and stocky like the sire. I haven't heard much in the last year about her brother but I know he was started on barrels and pulled a check or two before being sold.

Here are full siblings. Almost nothing alike in personality. 3yo gelding and weanling filly. Gelding has an amazing work ethic and loves to please, and the filly....well she's lucky she's cute. haha She is more rebellious, and she is going to be bigger than her brother.

Famous Silk Panties and All Fame No Bulll are full siblings.  but I'd say their dam, martinis and bikinis is an extremely special broodmare and she was breed to the best, DTF.  I know Famous Silk Panties has some full siblings all by Firewater Flit.  I'm excited to see how her babies do.

My mare has four full siblings. three geldings and one mare and then her. My mare is almost identical to the three geldings in looks and attitude and hopefully ability. The other mare and my mare are pretty much direct opposites. I went and tried her sister out since she was the only sibling anywhere near a price I could possibly afford and I couldn't bring myself to buying her. Completely different then my mare.

I have two full siblings. Two sisters, one three and the other two. Both extremely athletic and fast. I do think the two year old it faster than the three year old. Both can be kind of twits.

I don't know but I would love to find out. My horse and I were made for each other so the idea of having another one of him is very appealing!

I believe my horse has 3 full siblings. and every single one is different. Mine is quiet minded, quick learner, personal, and he is perfectly okay loping around the pasture when others are racing. his siblings are either born, bred, and begging to run the barrels, or more suitable as a kids horse

I raised a colt a few years ago that has 2 older full siblings. They all look very simililarly built, same color, similiar markings, same cute head and the 2 older siblings are both proven 1D winners and I have been told were so easy they trained themselves and I am hearing the same thing about the colt I had as well. He is on track right now to run in 2016 as a 5 yo. I am excited to see how he does.

Unfortunately, I lost his dam to colic 2 years ago, so I can't keep re-creating the cross or similar - but there is a 2 yo filly by a different sire and I sold her to the owner of her sire. They love her and she has a partner on her, so I assume that means they think highly of her.

Mine has three older brothers.... they all look a lot alike. All still young but the breeder said all were quiet. Mine is amazingly calm and smart. Just love him. Show him once and he's got it.

He's a 2015 colt.

I know human siblings are all basically different. Are horses usually the same way?

When you breed your mare to an outside stud...do you stick with one that worked well for you in the past or do you mix it up (and i'm talking in the early years of breeding your mare because it can take several years before you know if the cross worked).

If you had an older mare, and one cross worked well, would that be the stud you continue to breed to even though you may only have a short number of more foals due to the mare's age?

so with my mares, none of them have had babies so I looked at what was already working that was bred similarly to them. That's why I bred my Stoli daughter to a son of Frenchmans Guy (First Down French). I really liked that colt, and he should run in 2017. After that first cross, I thought about what else I have seen that I thought would cross well on her. I picked Firewater Ta Fame because I have seen several of his babies run and I have yet to see a bad one, even out of all sorts of types of mares. This one will be broke in the spring. Then the third time I bred her, I picked Slick By Design because I thought phenotypically he crossed well with her. that one will be here in April.

So long story short, I've gone three different ways with stallions. I've been happy with all three, but I wouldn't hesitate to breed her back to either one of those stallions if the cross ends up being super.
