my mare is off for the winter, diagnosed with a bowed tendon. It is on the inside of her right hind near the chestnut right under the hock. Vet xrayed and ultrasounded, ect. She is just now sore on it (diagnosed a few weeks ago). Vet said just leave her turned out and she should be fine by spring. Its a very rare and weird place to bow. Vet had me poultice for a week.

Question is, what other treatments do you guys recommend? I have BOT hock boots that I am going to start putting on her half day. Its not something I can "wrap" so I'm not sure what else to try to help her....

ETA: Has anyone tried SmartFlex Rehab pellets by smartpak? Or is there any recommended tendon/ recovery supportive sups that are recommended?

Why can't you wrap?

I have done game ready, poultice bentonite clay.

I also have stem cells injected into the tear, and they are confined to stall rest till healed

Would the MagnaCu 3N1 wraps not work on this area?  I love the MagnaCu tendon wraps with a standing bandage.  I use them all the time.

I say cant wrap due to the area. I cant keep a bandage/ wrap on. Its so close to the hock I would have to go up around the hock and I suck at hock wraps....

Have the vet show you how to wrap the leg.

You will probably need 2 no bows.

I wrap one no bow from the ankle up leaving the top loose. Then I take the second one, fold it in half wrap it around the leg, stick the bottom part of the half into the top part I left loose, then wrap half way up the cannon up. It does stay on.

This way they still have movement

I wouldn't put heat on it. Copper heals, which is why I love the MagnaCu line by PHT.

How would you be putting heat on it?

Bot, doesn't "heat" as per say, it reflects the body's heat. Since this is such a small surface area, and the blood is being moved out every second to two and cooling off after it leave the area.

The minute difference in the temp in that affected limb causes vasodilation, which allows more blood flow, which allows for more white blood cells to take the damaged tissue out, and creates better healing.

For soft tissue injuries, I have always iced first, game ready is the best as it is rhythmic compression. Then I wrap with bot, and repeat the next day.

Look into renting a Cytowave. There are videos on youtube and vimeo. I am using it on a horse that has severe tendonitis and have seen amazing results in just a couple of weeks. I also am using it on a horse that bowed a tendon in April and was told if I didn't do stem cell she was done competing. And after only 3 treatments you cannot see where it ever bowed. I have not taken her in yet for an ultrasound but she is sound in the pasture.

there isn't any pricing on the website. That can't be good lol. If you don't mind me asking a ball park? I would probably rent though, not buy.

I would poultice, bot, pht, any or all of the above. If I ever have yet another tendon problem I am going to try curost. I have used smart tendon and THE collagen formula recently. Did it help? I have no idea. With proper treatment tendons will heal fine. I would think it would heal faster with some stall rest.

I do too...

I was using BOT hock wraps on a horse that was very sick back in Jan/Feb.  He was swollen from the knees and hocks down, had open wounds on the backs of his ankles, tendons exposed, and also fighting peritonitis, hepatitis and whatever toxic substances were in our feed.

He was bandaged from the hocks down, but the hocks were swollen and hot to the point that I really figured that the wounds had gotten infected and we were going to have to put him down.  He was already on two different antibiotics for the peritonitis.  That night I decided to only wrap him from just above the ankles with the bandages necessary to keep his wounds clean.  I wrapped from the ankles up with my MagnaCu tendon wraps and left the BOT hock boots off as they were rubbing sores on his hot, swollen hocks.  I left the barn about midnight and came back out at 4a.m. to check on him.....his hocks were back to normal size!  I've never used anything that pulled swelling from above, but these sure did.  I kept the tendon wraps on him religiously for the rest of the time that he was on stall rest and never had another problem with swelling.  The increased circulation and the fact that they don't create heat was ideal.  The BOT caused him to sweat no matter what...and this was in Oklahoma in the winter time.

I don't use BOT on anything anymore.  My husband and daughter use their quick wraps for hauling, but we don't use them at all for "therapy".  The BOT sheet is only useable in the winter and is great for keeping them warm, but I prefer my MagnaCu sheet hands down.

There are a couple Used PHT groups on FB, or any of the used tack groups may also?

BOT doesn't produce heat, to produce heat, you either need a chemical reaction, or electricity, neither of which BOT has

BOT is ceramic and every time I've used them in the past the legs were much warmer and showed much more heat on thermo scans. To each their own. I've done my own studies using BOT on horses for 12 hour periods, then leaving them open for 12 hours, the using magnetic therapy. I won't touch BOT and gave all mine away. Never saw a difference.

I have only personaly dealt with one tendon injury, but have had friends who also dealt with them. From what I read and from the treatments we all did, at least 4-6 months stall/small pen rest or longer. I have never heard of turning one out. I was told and read turning out where they could run/buck/turn sharply would be a major set back
The first week was spent with cold hosing and ice boots several times a day. 2nd week was a sweat wrap on 24, off 12.
Shock wave was suggested. Either PRP or stem cell was suggested, one of those he didn't feel was worth the cost. I can't remember which

He was a middle age noncompetive horse so I chose time off and rest as the treatment. He healed up fine

Get someone (maybe google) to show how to make a spider bandage. You can use it to cover a poultice, etc. You would probably have to use elasticon or some other sticky tape around the top of the bandage to secure it to the skin, but spider bandages work very well on joints.
