Since i can't get the beautiful omnis or danco cubes I have been feeding alfalfa and orchard. Depending on the orchard my horses hate or love it. But they lick up the alfalfa. I'm a believer in keeping grass hay in front of them. Would a Timothy cube work to keep the grass in their gut? Do horses even like Timothy? I picked up an alfalfa/Timothy mixed cube at TS tonight to try out. Thanks.

My horses walk off and leave timothy hay. None of them like it.

Mine adore Timothy hay, but they're all pigs.

I find that more often than not, when a horse doesn't like Timothy it's because it's not quality. I have some VERY picky ponies in my barn and they all enjoy good Timothy.

Being thats most of what we get up here, yes our horse like timothy lol. Unless you get a load of pure alfalfa, its usually timothy, timothy/grass, or timothy/alfalfa.

agree with Andy.. depends on quality.. Timothy is the "go to hay "after colic surgery.. and at our large Animal Hospitals.. Must be easiest on the gut..Mine liiked the cubes alot soaked..

None of my horses have refused the Standlee timothy compressed bales or pellets. But they also have all eaten the sad ditch hay my barn supplies so evidently they're not that picky.

same here. We only have Timothy - my horses have no problem eating it. Sometimes they reject the alfalfa cubes.

Great news! THanks for the responses. I don't know what it is about the Orchard grass my supplier gets. Its the darndest thing. I buy like 20 bales at a time. Pretty much a month supply. Some bales they inhale and eat every little bit, others they just waste and wont even touch! But they do love their alfalfa. So I feed alfalfa 3x a day and try and keep good grass hay in front of them 24/7 but not if they are going to waste it at 25.00/bale. Thats why I was hoping to get some Alf/Timothy CUBES that they could munch on and that would keep that grass in their gut.

We bought 60-2 strand bales, as a gamble, from a roadside seller passing thru. Luckily it was $7 a bale. But didn't look like great quality. Either/or, my mare (down to one horsey :( ) eats it like a pig. I've only fed Bermuda grass. So I was skeptical. But she hogs it down like alfalfa.

We used to be able to get Timothy hay and then they guy quit growing it. It's really the best grass hay you can get. Now we feed orchard or fescue along with the alfalfa. Orchard is good too. Ours usually clean it up pretty good.

My 3 eat the Alf/Timothy cubes, Alf/Timothy Pellets or even just the plain Timothy Pellets but they also gobble the Alf/Oat cubes, the Alf/Bermuda cubes. I guess either they aren't picky or just pigs. Which I think they are more pigs than anything. I have also gave them the Standlee Alf/Timothy grass hay compressed bale. They eat that also.

Have you smelled it?
I have had the same problem with Coastal hay and found that some that he doesn't like you can really smell the fertilizer in it.

I have!!!! Before I buy my hay I walk out back to the big stacks at the feed store and it takes me half hour to look at each one, smell it etc.. TO me the orchard they carry smells awesome, not moldy or dusty, and is great. One bale they will eat and the next, right next to it, they refuse! LOL I am HOPING that they like the timothy and I can just mix a little in with the alfalfa to keep things moving. Its 29 dollars a bale so I don't want them to like it to terribly much! Maybe just the Timothy cubes will be enough. Who knows.. THanks for all the ideas.

Oh, the bales are 3 strand 100-125 pound bales.

Japanese horses must really like it.  Farmers around here were selling great quality 1st cutting for $350/ton a couple of years ago.  Always wondered what the end cost to that was.

My horses seem to love it.  I just got a load of big bales and I am surprised at how much the weanlings are eating it.  They have even been wasting some of the alfalfa.
