I feel out of the loop. I try to stay OFF the bandwagon with supplements and things for the most part. I like simplicity in my horses diets! But I've read a few posts mentioning Turmeric. I've done a little research, and it seems like it is being more widely fed. For those that are feeding it, why did you start feeding it? What are you using it for? What results have you seen?

Also, is it something that can be bought at local feed stores? Does it have to be ordered? What is cost/day/horse?

Is their a specific way of feeding it? I read that it must be combined with oil and black pepper on one site?

I started feeding Tumeric to my horses last summer and noticed nice changes with my big mare and my gelding. The mare is normally a little stiff in her right hind, she had injured her hock in the trailer @3 years ago and got an infection in the joint. The gelding had Sweeney shouldered himself probably 8 years ago and would be a little stiff in the left shoulder until you got him walked out and stretched. The results I got with the Tumeric is the biggest reason I decided to try the Cur_ost as the Cucurmin (sp) in it is the ingredient, for lack of better terminology, that Turmeric has in it naturally, just at a higher more precise level.

Feeding plain ol' turmeric I didn't notice a ding dang thing. But I think that is because the curcumin in turmeric isn't as concentrated as in a supplement where it's straight up curcumin (like the Cur Ost which I have not tried for my horse but am trying it out for myself).

I found a recipe that I am going to try. You can either cook it, or feed it dry:

1/2 cup turmeric powder
1 cup water PLUS 1 cup water, extra, if needed
1-1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1/3 cup cold pressed olive or coconut oil

Place turmeric and water in pan, stirring over gentle heat until you have a thick paste, custard or gravy consistency. (7-10 min). You may need to add the additional water along the way. Add the pepper at the end of the cooking; stir vigorously to incorporate the oil and allow to cool. Store in clean glass jar and refrigerate. Should keep for up to 4 weeks refrigerated, but best to use with 2.

Dry: Adapt the recipe and use fresh ground flax seed instead of the oil. Triple the amount, so 1 cup flax seed instead of 1/3 of a cup of oil. Add to feed and grind pepper at the time of feeding. Dampen feed with water so it will stick.

1 teaspoon twice daily with feed.

When my filly broke her elbow this summer I was recommended to feed Turmeric.  I dont know if it helped all that much, but she was only on pain medication for the first 3 days after surgery. Once we brought her home we were told to give previcox instead of bute. We only gave Turmeric and Comfrey.- She did just fine and there wasn't much swelling... even after they pulled the staples out.

I heard some don't feed it all the time (last I heard was 3 weeks on and 1 week off) any truth to that?? I am starting my mare who has breathing problems on Cur-OST Total Support and I want to start my 11 year old dog on Turmeric too. Best way to feed him it (he'll eat anything) and how long is OK? My dad wanted to try it too...can I just buy this stuff? http://www.swansonvitamins.com/starwest-botanicals-turmeric-root-po...

I think you will find turmeric in many of the supplements on the market today.

What is nice about the FB groups is the immediate response and support you will get from people that have been long time users.

Turmeric helps they body with blood flow! It is a great supp for all horses! I feed it with Hawthorne as well! I buy it mixed from my vet and for a one gallon bag it costs $27. I feed 2 table spoons moring and night- I mix it with safe choice grain and all 5 of my gelding love it!

Again though, I believe that not all Tumeric is going to have the same levels of Curimin (sp) in it which is the actual item you are after for the health benefits if I read the studies right.

Β I did a ton of research on this back last spring. I will attach a link to explain the differences between turmeric and curcurmin. And will try to post another on BCM-95 curcuemin, which offers the best absorption and is the kind of curcurmin used in the Cur-OST product. My research of turmeric, then curcurmin, then bcm-95 curcurmin is what led me to the product in the first place. In order to ensure you get the best results, it's important to know that both turmeric and curcurmin are both fat soluble and require a pepperdine to be active. The bcm-95 curcurmin is 95% absorbable with no added fat or pepperdine and requires no cooking or making paste. http://www.curcuminforhealth.com/the-difference-between-turmeric-an...

Remember years ago when someone said to give your horse mustard for cough?  That's when I tried the Tumeric because I knew dam good and well there was no way I'd get 50cc of mustard down this mare for a cough LOL  The Trihist and some other stuff hadn't worked, but I gave her a tablespoon of tumeric for just 2 days and coughed up this big wad of stuff and that was the end of the coughing.  I'm a believer :

Β That's how I got on it too but unfortunately my horse was too far gone for the mustard or.turmeric to be effective enough to do any good. I needed something more powerful, as I had already spent $5000 on vet bills and had been advised we had no other medical options. I bought a ton of turmeric powder and tried it but just couldn't get enough relief. The Cur-OST turned him around in 30 days. I just recently sent my turmeric powder to a BB so she could make use of it I'll never be without the Cur-OST for my crew and for myself!

Stance Equine makes a product called Tumericle, has turmeric, powdered coconut oil, black pepper and resveratrol.  I haven't tried it yet but it looks very interesting.
