Can You Hear Me Now?

A Peruvian Paso gelding. I brought him back from out west earlier this year for an older lady... he was a great horse and very well behaved for a good deal of time while he was here, pretty much bombproof, was a parade horse and rode in the Rockies all the time out west. Now not so much. The lady whom I brought him back for had a stable hand that we 'think' did something to him, it started happening 3 months after. He has progressively gotten very head shy and fearful of her barn area and anything we do in there. She let the stable hand go but he's taking a very long time to come around and she now is frustrated and it's showing up in him too. Her farrier told her today to get rid of the horse before he hurts her... this isn't the horse I picked up (it's been about 7 months). This lady wouldn't hurt a fly and has only his best interest at heart but is now scared because of what the farrier said.

SO...

Do you guys think I should turn him out in my herd for the winter and working on him in the spring... or do you think it would be better to work on him from day 1 (which would be hard since I have no arena and go to work in the dark and come home in the dark)? I am torn because I don't want it to get worse either (my field's are a lot bigger with more places for him to get away). He actually likes me and I am the only one he will come up to still when I go visit him (I think it kinda annoys her). I feel for this guy because he is a great horse and I can't figure out/ and don't know what happened but now he has her number. He's been ridden several times this fall by myself and her so it's not like he's been turned out and untouched.

I will get pics of Gomez when he gets here... along with my new Holidoc mare. I am nuts but my numbers keep growing!

Are your horses easy to catch?

My horses are easy to catch, so any horse with trust issues, I will kick out with mine, as then the horse sees me go out to the pasture and pet all the other horses, eventually they get curious and want to come up, I don't make a big deal about it, and with time they like to be scratched too.

If I have a horse that is just ignorant to catch, I can kick them out with the same horses, as mine have all learned the drill and will herd up, all I have to do is run the hard to catch horse around the herd until he gives up.

You don't actually have to "work" him. You can do quite a bit of work that will help him regain trust and confidence in the barn. Simply feeding him every night and grooming him while he is eating (asking him to pick up his feet, shift his hind and forequarters, etc) can go a very long way. Not only that, it will help to create a bond. Winter is the best time for that. I'm not a trainer, but jmho.

1st of all.... You need a farrier that is NOT going to try to stop a PP from paddling out... That is the natural gait for that breed. The 'poca poca poca poca' sound is what you WANT. It's a 4 beat gait....
Don't even get me started on people that slap horses in the face and make them head-shy.... Not on this night... (I'm already pi$$ed about something else)

If you had a stall with a run or small dry lot where he is around people all the time. That is what i would do.

My guys are all super friendly so that's not a problem. I have one that can be tricky to catch but will still come up to me in the field... It's only when I have a halter in my hand she says nope!

Komet don't worry Gomez still has his gait... the farrier may be an idiot for hinting this horse will hurt her in his spookiness but I have to admit he has trimmed her horses well. Gomez still does his funky little moves... I've never owned or been interested in gaited horses before but working and riding him with the lady has made me quite fond of this guy, and it's kinda fun to ride too.

I can almost say 100% that it was the stable hand that did something to him. I drove by once and watched him chase Gomez out of the corral not so nicely (this was what got him fired after I told her)... Her and I also saw how the horse blew and snorted in fear when the guy came around and we were grooming him or he was stalled. He has made some improvement in his trust around the barn, he will follow me into the tack room for his peppermint after he's been groomed (which he wouldn't do before) but to her it's not quick enough and it only seems to be with me.
