I know it's a lot more complicated to register a foal from a shipment of semen rather than that stud being on sight. I haven't done anything but I have a nice mare abut as cow bred as they come and I wanted to breed to a super race bred stud that did well on the track and has nice confo(which I found) I just don't want to do something stupid and not get it right and then have a grade horse that shouldn't be. Do they pull some hair? Some kinda Dna proof?please walk me through this:)

It's really not that much more complicated. All you have to do is request a Parentage Verification form for the foal when you go to register them. AQHA will send you the form. Pull about 30-50 hairs from the mane or tail so that the root is included, and then send back with the completed form.

You have to DNA your mare also. It's simple, just pull some mane hair. AQHA will make you DNA both mare and foal prior to issueing reg. papers on the foal. No big deal though. My advise is make sure your mare is done now. That will speed up your process, and expence if you do her now, then the foal when it's born.

Not to steal her thread but I'm kinda in the same situation except my mare is a registered paint and the sire is a quarter horse...is the registering process the same?

No. I wasn't required to submit any DNA. (hence my above post. I didn't realize AQHA had to!)
In fact, I lost my breeding certificate and even that was no problem!

Do the owners of the sire do the same thing with every foal he produces? Or do they have to do it only once so then it's just on record and only the foal is tested? Or am I lost on the wrong path here lol

Just order the DNA kit for the mare now from AQHA.
They send it to you, you pull 30-50 mane hairs and return the kit.  It is really easy.
And you might as well 5 panel your mare at the same time - they will use the same hair sample.

Once the Stallion's DNA is submitted to AQHA, it is good for life.

It's pretty simple they send you a kit and you pull a few mane and tail hairs and send it in.

Look on the horses papers first, if you didn't raise her, they may have already dna'd her.

Look for a DNA number by the barcode, or a parantage verification stamp

Look on mares papers for DNA verification ... when ordering DNA with the hair kit always ask for the parentage verification rather than just breeder DNA ... costs the same ... and you can call AQHA registration for DNA information and check and see if your mare is on the stallions breeding report ...

When you notify stud owner of having a live foal ... they will send you a pre-printed breeders certificate that is combined with foal registration papers and ask them to go click the release to register on their stallion breeding report so your registration will be smooth. This pre-printed form is sent to stallion owners directly after they file a stallion report so they can hold it if mare owner still owes them money ... and not allow the foal to be registered ...

The 5 panel test is not required on mares ... just stallions at this time ... it is a money maker for AQHA and not really viable since they have no history on having any of the diseases currently being active ...

If stallion owner does not have his pre-printed forms ... fill out a standard registration form you print off of AQHA site .... it is good to do this anyway so that you have studs and mares information if you do the online foal registration along with 5 photos of foal to use registering it ... form will give you what you need to do it ...

It is also smart to create a file on your mare on your computer and scan all of her aqha papers and anything you send to register the foal to have a record of them in case you have registration problems or need to re-send anything ... also convenient when selling a horse to send papers etc etc via email attachments ..

DNA requirements have been in effect for 20+ years .. so you will find very few mares without DNA tests ... most without DNA tests are geldings these days ...

I normally do DNA when I register any of my filly foals as a convenience and selling point to a new owner buying one of my babies ...

Stallion owners require copies of mares papers and are very helpful on notifying you if no DNA has been done and if they fail to ... AQHA definitely will when registering the foal ... lol
