Location: Northern CA | I am the business manager at a small school district, I like my job, but with a new boss this year, a lot of responsibility has been put on me. I am completely fine with the work load, but I do not have the credential or title to legally be responsible for all of the stuff being dumped on me. I have the opportunity to apply for a the same position in a larger school district, a more specialed position, working with an adminstration team, not just me alone. However, I am afraid I will be giving up a lot of freedom. I guess I am just looking for a little back up from horse people on this decision, my husband sees the large increase in $$$ and is all for it, I see the large decrease in freedom and am a little hesitant.
Current Job pros: very flexible, off at 3:30, 20 days/yr vacation, opportunity to work 4 10's in the summer, pay all of our health/dental premiums, can bring my dog to school, comfortable, basically my own boss
Current Job Cons: possible legal issues with the tasks I am being required to do, new boss is letting a lot slide- possible negative actions for the district as a whole, other employees don't seem to take things seriously, I am the one always having to make sure they are doing their jobs accurately, 40 miles from home, doing the jobs of many people
New job pros: 33k more annually, 15 miles from home, work with admin team, fewer jobs meaning I can become good at my tasks, instead of being so I busy I can only be adequate enough to get them done
New job cons: can't bring my dog :-(, hours are until 3:30, but current person is having to work a lot of unpaid overtime, only 15 days/yr vacation, have to cover a portion of our health/dental premiums, the learning curve
I hate decisions! |

Location: Oklahoma | Is the 33K more a year going to more than cover the new premiums you will be paying & the unpaid OT?
I wouldn't sweat over 5 more days of vacation time for a 33K jump... but that's just me.
Good luck!!! |

The 5 days less vacation wouldn't scare me off. The only thing that would get me is the unpaid OT, but you're still getting a considerable amount more money so it wouldn't be that huge of a deal. Do you have your offer letter? |

Location: Northern CA | I believe that the increase to health and wlefare would be about 10k a year, so an increase of 22k. I have my interview on Thursday, I am very familiar with the district, job, and current person who holds the position (my neighbor), so I do feel pretty cofident, but there is always that chance that I won't even have to make the decision.
It just hit home yesterday, when I had already been home, cleaned stalls, blanketed, and started dinner by the time the current employee got home :-( |

Location: Northwest Florida | That is a nice increase in pay.. However the shift change would be difficult to get used to.
I went from working Mon-Fri 6-230 to working Tues-Fri 7-530. Four tens is nice, but those three hours in the afternoon make such a huge difference! I used to feel like I worked half days, and now I feel as though all I do is work and sleep. Especially with the time change, it seems like I get off work in the middle of the night! (but I have a 1 hr commute, also).
I say take a coin- heads is new job, tails is the old one and flip it. Don't look at it once it falls. While it's in the air, you'll know what YOU really want..
Good Luck! |

The unpaid OT would probably scare me off. I got a job offer several years ago for about $15K more than I was making BUT they wanted you to work "occasional"OT - come to find out that was 10 hr days AND a lot of Saturdays - was NOT worth it to me.

Location: Southeast Louisiana | The unpaid ot would scare me. In my experience, they can use and abuse that and there is not much you could say as you knew about it taking the job. I want to know (about) when (at least most of) my days are going to end!
Also, I noticed that a lot of what you mentioned, as far as the cons of your current job, well a lot of those things just come to light after you have been in a certain position for a while. (Or working with a certain group of people, I should say.) You might have the leverage to make some changes in your current job, depending on how long you've been there. If you sit down with your current boss and discuss your concerns the right way, some good changes may come about. It takes time to cultivate that type of working relationship with people. If you get in the new position and encounter personnel problems, you will just be the new person who complains a lot.
How long have you been at your current job? How is the turn over rate? Do bosses in that position come and go or are they there to stay for a while? You can wait out a bad boss. They tend not to last very long before others see they are the problem then they go away. |

Location: Texas | Concerning the unpaid OT, would they consider letting you comp the time (taking time off) for those hours? 33K a year raise is alot to think about. |

Location: The edge of no where | Just says current person is working a lot of OT, maybe it's their time management skills? (idk, just a thought). I've yet to have a decent job that didn't occasionally require unpaid OT, it's just part of life. |

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | Do you like a challenge? Do you like driving less miles every day? Do you use all of your vacation time now? Is bringing your dog to work at the top of your priority list? I wouldn't worry too much about the OT, everyone works at a different pace and if you streamline a few functions, the OT will not be necessary.. Good luck on your decision! |

Location: Displaced Iowegian | 22K would certainly cover a LOT of "unpaid" OT.....Additionally, add up the mileage (and time driving) difference in a years time and that is quite substantial. |
