Ok so my yearling colt has been lame on his right hind foot for about 2 weeks now. Not extremely lame by any means, but enough for me to notice he wants to toe first when walking and when resting having only his toe on the ground. Vet came out, he tested very sore in the heel area through sedation and a twitch. Vet is thinking abscess deep below the hoof bulb. I've been soaking his hoof in Epsom salt/ warm water once daily for about 2 weeks and have seen no signs of an abscess even trying to come through. I'm wondering how long can it take for one to bust? I've dealt with a few abscesses but they've all been pretty easy to deal with and have busted through in a week or so of soaking. Vet says that maybe we need to do some radiographs to see either a) where the abscess is or b) if something else might be going on. My thoughts first go to navicular or laminitis but don't those normally present in the front feet? What else could I be dealing with here? Thoughts, Suggestions, Advice?

I had a mare that had a gravel in her back foot. She was walking just like u describe I. A couple of weeks it came out of the top of her hoof. Took a while to get over it.

Sounds like an abscess, although like you I would have thought it would have busted by now with all the soaking. I would try some icthamol along the sole & hair line and see if that pulled it out. If it didn't, then I would definitely get radiographs. Has he been turned out? Usually the movement helps too.

Actually he's been on stall rest for an unrelated injury...ugh!

probably abscess. but juvenile problems that aren't abscesses are *usually* not navicular or laminitis.. could be other things.. young horses have OCDs commonly, physitis, maybe fracture, etc... the fact that he's not super lame makes me think its not anything crazy like a fracture but OCD is always a possibility.

We had a weanling who did this same thing, we couldn't figure out where he was limping from.. vet radiographed his hock stifle all the usual OCD places- he was clean. It was just something he grew out of. Kept him stalled for a couple months and he got better.

I agree...it's just so weird that's why I'm puzzled. He's not hardly lame at all, but enough for his momma to notice! I am am going to try SKM's miracle abscess treatment and see if we can get something to break thru.

I have a gelding with the same thing going on- landing toe first and reluctant to put much on his heel. His is a hind also. Vet did a basic lameness and found he reacted to the hoof testers on outside bar. He does not suspect a stifle issue. We also did thermal imaging (not sure how accurate it is) and it showed the bulbs of the heels on up carrying the most heat. He has me worried because he has gotten progressively worse lameness wise and has gone from slightly lame to clearly lame.

I was just checking in to see if there was an update on either of the horses with current lameness issues? Prayers for a quick, easy recovery.

Why do people only give half the story when they are looking for help .......

WHAT WAS THE OTHER INJURY THAT PUT HIM ON STALL REST??

50% of the time when you do stall rest you end up with a 3 legged horse ...

With the tipping toe I would look at suspensory ligament problems ....... not stifle problems ... and if you are thinking abscess ... where are the antibiotics ??

Just because a person is nice does not mean they are a good vet!!

Not sure what your problem is... But he IS on antibiotics. And like I said, the injury is unrelated, so I did not feel the need to explain.

To the other poster who was concerned about an update, vet will be out Next week for radiographs.
