Hope it is ok to post the link.. but  American Pharoah  needs to follow Secertariat's footsteps and be on the front of Sports Illustrated as Sportsman of the Year! I think it was an amazing effort and  if you want to cast your vote    http://www.si.com/sportsmanofye…/…/10/vote-si-sportsman-poll

I did not nor will I. SI did not name Secretariat sportsman of the year and therefore AP should not be named such. This award will never mean anything to AP. He will never be able to understand it, acknowledge it or benefit from it. It would be a waste to strip this award from a person that earned it through hard work to give to an animal that earned it through breeding.

I guess Secretariat didn't deserve to be put on the cover of Time either?

AP is an athlete. That's what Sports Illustrated is designed to highlight and celebrate.

It's not about being on the cover. Secretariat made the cover of those two and Newsweek.

I voted for the Royals.... who, along with AP, are far and away the people's favorites. Even Russia is voting for AP!!

Ok - so I had to laugh at this one.. cause the first thought that popped in my head is the ability for a person to be a awesome athlete is physical ability (breeding) and hard work (training). For example if your parents are 5 ft tall you aren't playing basketball.

Great. So he worked for almost two years? Most people work for a lifetime to achieve what they have done. AP ran 8 races this year (losing one). Most of them taking a little over two minutes. For that, people are ready strip away years of hard work from people that understand what it means to be chosen for this award.
This award is not named "Athlete Of The Year"...

It's not the two minutes Komet.  It's the grueling training these great horses endure.  Horse racing is not my favorite sport because of the toll it takes on these youngsters but you have to give credit where credit it due.

I have a question. How many of you actually get Sports Illustrated and read it?

I used to buy the swimsuit edition every year. Does that count?
Frodo... The "Grueling" hours spent doing what horses are born to do anyway? Think of all the time spent by a baseball team playing 162 regular (3+hour) games each year.+ the Spring Training...+ all the years spent on AA and AAA farm teams to get ON a pro team... Plus the HS and college years playing...
I still say, give the award to someone that can appreciate it. The horses have the "Horse Of The Year" award... That should be good enough to appease the owner, trainer and jockey. I have no doubt that will go to AP.

First of all, if you don't read a particular magazine, why would you even worry about what is on the cover???? I have to agree with Komet. I am quit sure that AP is or will be on the cover of every Racing magazine. Never have really associated Sports Illustrated with racing publications.
