Never been in this situation before...

How do u handle or what do u do with a spoiled brat of a horse? She came that way to me, now i am dealing with it...

When u ask her to do something, i get the tail swish, like get lost lady, and then she does what i asked....

What is gritty? When i bought little filly, girl said the guy who broke her said she was gritty, so what does that mean exactly????? Does the sour puss attitude go along with that???? Sheesh she is only 4yo

I am starting to dislike her more n more

She rides horrible at home, like wrestling w a 1000lb ADD kid

But when i haul her to the arenas she rides good, which is 2/3x a week

I don't know if this will help you or not. I have a 4 year old mare who was admittedly spoiled rotten, mainly by my husband. She was ill about picking up her right lead and would rear up when she got mad. I sent her to my colt starter and she had her work cut out for her the first week. After that she started improving drastically and we went and watched her Wednesday and she's riding awesome. She ties her out a ton or puts her on the walker and that helps also. I would think if it was just being spoiled that would change after being worked regularly. At least mine did, I hope you have good luck with her.

I'd be inclined to give her boot camp treatment. Saddled in the morning, tied all day, rode at night; maybe ride in the morning too. Lots of roundpen work. Might be beneficial to have a vet look her over to make sure something's not bothering her. Maybe massage/Chiro/teeth?

She she has been vetted, good to go....

I have only had her since 8-29-15, girl i got her from didnt have time for her, she was broke last summer and thats all i know....

She is all cow bred, which i have never owned....

So how do u tell difference between "gritty" and just a bad attitude?

To me, gritty means stand offish and all business... I could be wrong

This filly is lazy, so right now we are working the corkscrew circles trotiing and loping, trying to teach her to keep moving forward, bc before u be loping and she just quit and come to a dead stop......

To me gritty and bad attitude are different.

To me it sounds like she has sulled up, she is bored, arena sour.

I had one come back from a trainer, for two months she was rode in a round pen. She was so sour when I got her home, it was sad.

She has been home 2 months now, and a completely a different horse, for the first month, I trail rode, road riding, gave her a mental break. The second month I started working on circles, and buttons, she hasn't sulled up since, more free moving, and happy.

Point of this. Do something different, get out and ride, challenge her, chase cows, do a ranch horse competition, work on obstacles, trail ride.

 Agree with Charyl..

Youngsters get bored .. and also her age her hormones and Ovaries might be a issue.. as well..
when you ride Id ride light , no leg and less of anything, I learned my cowbred doesnt like alot of fuss or asking..
The more Id ask with leg the more he wanted to shut down.
do alot of open pasture and trails to..

She rides great away from home, i haul her 2-3x a week to arenas to ride and get exposure.....

But here at home, its like she had ADD...

And yes, maybe u are right about the asking, bc spurs totally t her off, and when i bump her w my legs i get the tail swish that say get lost lady....

I have never rode or owned an all cow bred horse before...

My arena here at home is out n middles of my 20acre hay field, and yes we do lots of pasture riding, we have huge drainage ditches and we work them, i also work her backing up and backing down the smaller ditches.....

She is real gun/playgun on top and doc o lena on bottom

She has been chiro'd, had wolfe teeth extracted, teeth floated, hocks injected, caslicks surgery, did a deep ear exam while sedated as well and they were clean...

This was last month mid October

I just got her on 8-29, so havent had her long....

And maybe its just she needs lots and lots of miles, idk....

She's a 4yo and already needs hocks injected?!

vet stated "hocks were positive on the flex test" and that they needed to be done....

I don't have much backstory on this little filly either, just that she was broke last summer as a 3yo....

I would honestly quit picking at her, no more backing up, no more circles, no more mindless drills.

I would treat for ulcers, and just trail ride for a month, she is telling you she needs a break from whatever you are doing.

Sounds more like she is ****ed off..rather than spoiled...and imo you have bigger issues if you had a 4yr olds hock injected.....stop picking on her...just go for a leisurely trail ride...remember shes only 4......m

depends on if she had a job before, but she didnt. I wouldn't be shocked at a 4YO needing hocks done if they were on the track or being trained on pretty hard for futurities. Not that I think any of it is ideal, it's just not shocking to me. But since she was only broke as a 3YO, makes me wonder why she's already sore in her hocks. Would be worth radiographing to see if there's a reason why she's sore already.

You've had her all checked out for soundness, taken care of what the vet found to be issues. You mentioned that she doesn't like bumper spurs so you took them off, and she still swooshes her tail when you put your leg on her but does what is asked. To me gritty is a toughness, like working really hard fighting thru tough ground, a little bit of an attitude, but still a willingness. In my opinion cow bred type horses can be a little tough and very opinionated lol. It takes some time to figure out a new horse and it could be any number of things. She may still have something bothering her, she may not like to be "picked on" and a more subtle riding routine would serve her best. Like lots of long trotting, and if she's doing what you ask when you ask her, don't ask over and over again. If she bends/flexes, has nice form in circles, stops straight and softly, counter arcs, turns over hocks, etc., Don't make her do all of it every day. OR just once or twice and not all w/in five minutes. Take breaks and just walk. She may just need to be ridden quietly. Maybe she is very smart and gets bored, maybe she isn't in shape and gets tired and gets in a bad mood. Maybe your conditioning/training is too aggressive for her. My suggestion is try different things, each one for a few days and see if that makes a difference. You both just need to figure each other out. It's easier for me to type this here (since I am at work) rather than text it. :) Just give yourselves the time you need to figure it out. She's bred nice and is young enough to be able to mold her mind, shouldn't be set in her ways.
You'll get lots of advice if you ask, none of it will be bad, you just have to try, give it time, and try again. :) I feel like I rambled - sorry! I am having riding withdrawls :))

Sounds to me she needs an attitude adjustment.... I don't think it's asking to much of a horse to walk, trot, lope, and back.... If you can rule out pain(ulcers could be an issue, especially because you just purchased her and changed up her schedule), I would be getting after her butt!!! At 4yrs old the basics shouldn't be asking to much. The moment she pins her ears, swishes her tail and gives an attitude, I'd remind her real quick why that's not a good idea!! If I'm not mistaken, this is the same mare that bucked with you?

It doesn't matter if she's a cow bred, race bred, thoroughbred, etc... if you ask them to do something, they need to do it or at least try...

I've got a Doc O'lena bred gelding, I don't know if that line is known to be lazy or its just a coincidence, he's lazy. I'll ask him to move out and he'll throw his head up and pin his ears like it's killing him to have to move his feet. Occasionally I'll get the crow hope and swishing tail. Ask him to run and he'll lower his head and pin his ears but his dang feet won't move any faster! Bastard had me fooled until he was about 5 I took him to a roping and discovered that he actually had a few other gears! Smart SOB.... I still(he's 15 now) on some days have to over and under him within the first 5 minutes of our ride.

Yes, I did the whole vet workup, x-rays, teeth, chiro, etc, etc... Only to discover that a quick warming of the backside, healed him!

I agree with Cheryl.....quit messing with her.  She's bored.  I would pony her at home and ride her when you go somewhere.  I actually like that attitude in one and have a 5 YO gelding that you have to peddle for every step he takes at home.  He's bored and wants a job.  Take him off the place and he's excited and forward and enjoys himself and he will work his heart our for you and give you 110% of everything he's got.
