How do you all feel abut changing a registered name? Especially when a horse comes from a big name ranch?
He is only 4 and has no AQHA or FF points yet.

Your horse, do what you want. I've changed a couple names. My stallion had a name I didn't want passed on as it was dumb, so I changed it. The horses I have now though, I've kept registered names and people know the prefix at the beginning of their names.

I have one now that I am planning on changing their name. I personally dislike it when a ranch uses their intials in a registered name, and I also dislike it when the name has absolutley nothing to do with the breeding of the horse. (Which my filly has both of these.) Just my opinion and I'll have it changed on one of mine soon.

His name is directly relatted to his breeding in a very generic way. He comes from the Jud Little ranch and I do not want to hurt resale value by changing his name but it really is just 3 words thrown together and its awful.

I don't mind the PC in front of my horse's name, BUT in the same breath, if it didn't come with the T4 brand on its hip, don't use the PC in the name to make it appear to have come from the Cowan's. Just because it is a grand or great grand of Sun Frost, if the Cowan's didn't breed it or brand it, it should not have the PC in the name.

For me personally-I think it's kind of silly to waste any effort/money on changing a registered name, however, I ride geldings and don't care AT ALL what their registered name is...... even if its sounds crude when my name is announced at a race and I'm riding  "one of the guys" makes some people's eyebrows go up!

Β  All right, now I think we need to know that horse's name...or horses names. :) So far I haven't changed a horse's name, but haven't seen a reason to...nothing embarrassing or weird.

funny this post came up... I am sending in my geldings name change form in the mail tomorrow. He is 6 and I entered him in a local show for the first time a few weeks ago and when they called our names they said Jamie on Buggys Chances... His name is Bugsys Chances... That was it. Like HE*L am I riding a buggy! HA!

My brother has a little gelding he bought and his registered name is "Hes Fred".... One of the dumbest names I've heard but my brother loves it and it does fit his personality. I would love to know the thought process in naming him that.

I changed the rocket mare's name from Streakinsomyonder to Bunny Be Quick.  Both names call out her bloodlines, but one is weird and one is catchy.  And now I get to incorporate either 'Bunny' or 'Quick' much easier into her foal names.

I tried to change a mares name from "Little Miss Loni" http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/little+miss+loni to "Ill Skip the Pie", but ended up not being able to. How they came up with Little Miss Loni I really just have no clue lol If you don't like his name, change it!

I changed my colt's registered name. I cringed when I would hear it announced and couldn't stand it!

Your horse. Change it if you want.

Changed his when I bought him as a yearling. It was Stone Cold Chocolua (I hate wrestling) so I named him Artful Assault. A lot of my horses have some kind of barn/reg name for WWII. His barn name is Audie Murphy and I enter him that way at open shows. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/artful+assault

One of my friends had a mare a horrible registered name, & she changed it. It was missed spelled to top it off.
