Which do you prefer? Just curious to see who likes what better! As for me, I love the rodeo lifestyle and am not a huge fan of nbha, and barrel races.

I love them all. A barrel race is a barrel race is a barrel race to me. I'm not afraid to enter up anywhere in any format in any company.

To me jackpot pays out to the first three or four fastest times. NBHA or other similar formats are 4D or5D barrel races. That is the way they advertise them around here. Also a jackpot adds 5 seconds for a knocked down barrel where as in a 4D you are DQ'd. If we had jackpots around her the only people who would show up would be the tough 5 or 6 1D horses duking it out for the money. With the 4-5D format, the small barrel races draw over 200 around here.

What kind of jackpots do you have where you live?

The only jackpots I've been to around here are 4d, so they're very similar to an nbha just with more added money.

I agree! I do it all but I just fell in love with the rodeo atmosphere, and it seems like they move a lot quicker.

First of all, rodeos are jackpots. Rodeos move faster because maybe 10 people run in the performance, the rest run in the slack. Apparently, you have never had to run in slack with 60 barrel racers. Not too fast. I think it would be rare for a rodeo to have as many entries as a 4D. Like I said, around here, there are 200 entries at a small barrel race. One last night at a cowboy church had 217. Yes, they move slow with that many.

The only reason a rodeo moves faster then a jackpot is because they only take so many for the show and they have to move them pretty fast to stay with the schedule of the rodeos show, then they have slack to run what is left of the riders. Yes a jackpot is slower its because its all barrel racers and you have anywhere from 200 to a 500 running.
You must have not ever riden in a 3 day show where its all barrels. Some of the shows here will have over 1000 running and a Rodeo will have maybe 10 to 15 in a show, and of course theres slack if they need it.

I would rather jackpot.

Reasons being,

I am not a roper, and I find there are millions of ropers in slack, and they all take their sweet time in the box, which makes the day drag out even more.

I would rather park at an event for the weekend, visit, work colts, compared to hitting 4-5 rodeos in a weekend

Better ground conditions, therefore less risk of my horses getting hurt

Smaller jackpots I don't have to preenter, so if the weather is crappy, I am not forfeiting my entry fees, or I am not forced to run compared to a rodeo where you have to preenter and pay turnout fines.

Rodeos here have hard slick ground if your horse can't handle bad ground he won't hold up. I like the 4d

Nothing beats the rodeo atmosphere, but I don't love it enough to go out and buy a rodeo horse and I'm not going to enter just to donate. So I'll continue my fair weather barrel racing ways until one of mine shapes up and makes me want to hit the road again.

I have to be honest, if I could run barrels at rodeos, I'd be at far fewer barrel races!

I like both for their various reasons. I like the friendship at the jackpots, hanging out with my friends all day and working upstairs. I enjoy the weekend races where we camp out. Rodeos are definitely run and go.. on to the next one. nothing beats placing at or winning a rodeo... the atmosphere is electric. But, to me rodeos are all business.. and fast. no down time. And slack is horrible IMO haha. Running 12th on the ground at a pro rodeo sure sucks. No one says they have to do 10, they just have to match how many were in the perfs. so if they take 12 in a perf, you drag on 12 in slack. which sucks. Also, the patterns are sometimes set up really weird at rodeos because its some random committeeman setting the pattern who doesn't care if the barrel is 10 feet off the fence.

I would rather rodeo, hands down.  I only go to barrel races when they are close to home and there isn't a rodeo.  I also rope, my husband steer wrestles, and my stepson ropes and steer wrestles.  Rodeo we can all do together as a family.  When I go to a barrel race, I am usually on my own (not that sometimes you don't need that, lol).  I was raised rodeoing and the atmosphere is like no other.

To me it all depends on what you have to run and what your goal is.  The rodeos are just as slow as barrel races if you have a contractor that likes to jack around. Running 12th on the ground is not at all fun either, but we all have to draw that position sometime and it makes you appreciate being 5th on the groud at a barrel race. LOL  Plus the rodeo money is better. I hate running the 5th fastest time and barely covering my fees with 100 runners.

I have a pretty cool little horse right now that I will not run at a jackpot unless it is for a good size check. I don't want to waste my runs at jackpots when my goal next year is to try for the IFR.  I also won't run him at smaller rodeos anymore.

I have another horse that will be my "jackpot horse" for the year. She will be the open, smaller rodeos horse and the one I run at barrel races or series. She will usually hit the top of the 2D.

I wish I had a colt that I could dedicate my winter to getting seasoned, but I don't at this time.

I agree the Rodeos are so much fun and if your a young and unmarried person it could be over the moon for you lol. But I like the jackpots, the ground is just so much better and you have better chances of not hurting your horse, they can get hurt on any ground but at a good run jackpot the chances are less. All the bigger races that I have been to have great payouts, like the ANHA, D&G's and the list gos on...

I'm happy to run at whatever I can get to.....many rodeos have slack during the week, that's not feasible with my job.  I LOVE that many barrel races allow you to pre-enter online a couple of days out (even tho there are no late charges at the race).  I never hang out all day.  Go make my run and get out of there.....too many other things to do on weekends.  I'm hauling a green one along with my open horse and it's so nice that some of the producers will let you pre-enter exhibitions as well.   The atmosphere doesn't matter to me - I'm there to work horses and I really don't care what anyone else is doing.

If I was running more competive times, I would absolutely do rodeos. Nothing compares to the atmosphere and rush you get running during performance!  But since I am still floundering in the 4D, I will stick with those.
