Does anyone feed previcox daily? I bought a mare that is fed it for "just in case" and minor pains when she's in season. I have never used it and wanted some opinions.

I used to feed it daily. Ive done a lot of research on different things. A lot of the research is suggesting that it has a negative effect in the long run because it does not let the body create inflammation in order to naturally start the healing process.

Long term it can also cause ulcers, suppress bone marrow production, all the same things as bute or banamine, it just takes longer to see the side effects

I fed it daily for a few years to a 30 year old horse, he died at 34 from kidney failure. it did seem to help him and keep him much more comfortable. I have asked my vet about use in other cases and he says it takes a while to build up and has never advised using it on anything else, but has recommended bute instead - but I haven't had anything else with a chronic issue.

When injections didn't totally help my horse's fusing hock, I did feed it to him daily.

Remember that Previcox does NOT function like bute. It doesn't have an immediate reaction like bute. I've used two different equine specialists and they both told me the same thing.

Better to give them the smaller tablet 57 mg because that is more accurate that breaking the large tablet into 4 pieces. On the first day, you give THREE tablets, and then one-a-day thereafter. You need to get it to a loading dose and then maintain it. Yes, that means you need to feed it every day to maintain it. Best if you can feed it about the same time of day each day.

I guess my question to you would be: Why does this mare NEED it? Any medication has possible side effects. If there's not an absolute reason why she needs it, I would not use it. Especially not "just in case". Horses can live through minor pains the same way you and I do.

Have a mare that fractured her patella in Feb of 2011, gave it to her daily for a little over a year then weaned her gradually from it but still on it for races and the likes. She was diagnosed in May of 2014 with Kidney stones as well as a bladder stone. 2 vets feel the Previcoxx played a huge roll in the formation of the kidney issues where as another vet feels the inflammation from the initial injury is what caused the body to not process food correctly and have accumulations which formed the stones. Not sure which one I believe but let me just say I will use it with much much greater caution from here on out and never on her, nor bute because of the known kidney issues she has. I was using a product called Neoprofin AVF that I really liked but I did have to give it 3 times a day for pain or inflammation as it is an enzyme and I will probably use that again for acute injuries like when she kicked over a panel. In the meantime I have switched to Cur_ost Total Support and we ran at a 2 day race for the first time since she fractured the patella, she felt great both days on it alone.

I feed it daily to prolong hock injections and it seems to make a huge difference. If I was keeping the horse for a long time I would probably try and find a better routine, but for now the previcoxx is doing what I need it to..

I am feeding it daily to our mare who's hocks are fusing. It has made a ton of difference in her perfomance. I don't know how long she will need it. I suppose till her hocks are totally fused. But for now, she is feeling great and running better than ever. I know a lot of people using it on older horses, and having no ill affects.

It says not to give it for more than 30 days in a row. I would be concerned about the possible kidney damage that all NSAIDs can do when given for long periods of time. Even though previcox is safer than bute, it's still an NSAID and still can cause GI ulcers and renal damage.

That being said, I know several people who give it daily and haven't had any issues. but those issues are always a possibility.

So is it something you can give for a certain length of time and then stop it for awhile? After which you can give it again? Had different vets say different things so I wondered what folks on here thought.

I'm curious about this too. For example, giving it daily for 4-5 months of the year during competition season and then not giving it at all during the rest of the year.

Per my vet. You cut the pills into 4ths. You can give 1 piece (1/4) per day or you can do 3 pieces day before show and 1/day each day you run and 1 day after you run.

Your vet is referring to the 227mg pills. Not the 57s. You split those into quarters

You only do this if you are using the larger 225 mg tablets, which I don't like because you can never get the things to cut or break into perfect even pieces; thus you are going to inadvertantly ALTER the amount of medication given to your horse. I much prefer the 57 mg tablets becauase they are exact.

From my own experience with using Previcox, I like to have them on it 1 week before a big event. It seems to "take a while" to fully get into their system and really reap the maximum benefits.

I've had my gelding on it daily for a couple years and will continue to do so as it is given under the recommendation of my vet who went to school for a really long time.   This is the world wide web.  There are those that pull crap out of their butt and post it on here even though they more than likely don't know what they are talking about. :41:  Ask your vet as to whether Previcox is something that will help your horse and also ask what dosage you should be giving.

You do bring up the most important point.

People do need to consult with their vet.

However, vets are a paid employee, and I have met very few who will actually go against the owners wishes and advocate for the horse.

This is why there are so many vets who blindly inject, instead of inspecting, palpating, flexion tests, blocks, and then X-rays/ultrasound before injecting. This is the proper procedure. Yes it costs more money, but atleast you know what you are dealing with.

I strongly suggest that people try and find all the info they can about the procedure, lameness, procedures used, etc. make a list of the questions, as well as your long term goals with the horse.

Ask about the risk versus effect of each and every drug and how it works on the body, and what the long term effects can mean.
