Location: California | Okay, so is there anyway to help keep my dog warmer during the winter months?
He's older (17) & I'm starting to worry about how he can hold up this winter. I can't keep him inside when I leave to work. I have to leave at 6AM for work, when the weather is around 35 degrees. I'm expecting it to get much colder. Where I have my dogs kennel, there is no electricity.
How can I heat up the area & help him stay warm without having to plug something in? |

Make a bed out of hay, my dogs love hay when its cold. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I bought my mom's 23 year old cat a dog bed that the material was designed by NASA...it heats up to the temp of whatever lays on it. Woodie loves it, she is outdoors and will not come inside. Has made it thru 3 winters with temps down in the teens over night in that bed. |

Location: California | Ooo that dog bed made out of NASA material sounds brilliant. I could also throw in a ton of straw just in case he decided to lay somewhere else. I had found this little propane heater on Amazon, that I believe Home Depot sells... But that makes me nervous. |

23 years old? I had no idea a cat could live that long especially an outside cat. Wow that is something! |

Get a blanket for him to wear. Weathabeeta makes nice ones and they resonably priced.
He has a BOT blanket that I put on him; it's the heavier duty one. I still feel bad if I see him shivering w/it on. He doesn't have much fat on him lol, I try to feed him good & make him fat but it doesn't always work very well. |

Location: London Ontario | Add raw eggs a few times a week to his meal. He should gain a little weight off it. Or try raw meat. good luck! BOT also makes dog beds... |

Location: Central Texas | I know you said there was no electricity where he is but does that mean you can't run extension cords to his location? I have to do this with my outside dog. He has a dog house and I run extension cords to it for a heat lamp. He doesn't come out of his house when it's cold now! If that isn't an option, then definitely a nice enclosed dog house with hay, alot of blankets/old comforters and dress him in a good warm doggy blanket. |

My dogs would tear up any dog bed that I gave them, so now they get a sweatshirt and a heat lamp. They LOVE it. |

Yea, he's pretty far up the hill from the house. His kennel is up by the horse barn. It's about 6 acres of property. The house is a mobile home near the front of the property & the barn is about in the middle. I would need a super long extention cord, that would have to handle being driven over by cars. I was thinking of making a dog house & getting some type of insulation from Home Depot. He doesn't chew on anything so that should be a safe idea. |

I was doing this for a good while! & then I ran out of eggs lol. I was feeding him this raw, freeze dried food from True Dog, but it's super expensive & they only sell it in small (less than 1lb) bags. Right now he is getting the salmon formula by Science Diet. |

Could he be kenneled inside the horse barn? Do you have a garage he could be in during the day?
Otherwise, those igloo dog houses full of straw work well for our blue heeler. Those things are designed for the cold.

She lived on our roof for about 15 years after she hung herself on a fishing lure hanging from an old antique fishing bascket, she is just too dang old to run the roof top like she used too :-) Though she was up there a few times this week. The bed is a life saver. |

Location: California | There is one pretty enclosed stall right next to my horse. I'll have to check it out later. It was used as a sheeps pen in the past, so I'll have to go over it for wires, sharp points, wind spots & if he can get in with the other horse (not mine). The Arab on the other side of the pen doesn't really like dogs, so I'd have to be sure he can't get kicked. It just might work though! |

Location: California | I've gotten a lot of really great ideas! So far, the igloo sounds like a good idea; I believe they have some pre-insulated. That with a nice dog bed & probably move him to the horse barn with lots of straw & shavings. He has his BOT blanket, so I think that should help a bit too. Thanks for all the ideas!

I was in the same boat with my dogs... I didn't want them in my house! We pulled the horse trailer up next to the house and put in a heat lamp for them with extra blankets and a tarp over half of it because it's a stock trailer. Worked great ... dogs starting keeping us up all night barking at the coyotes and whatever else was creeping around so now they are inside the house at night and the chickens inherited the heat lamp in their coop.. |
