Location: texas | On ur "rollback" style horses, how deep do u ride them into the turn???
As in, ur leg at the barrel then turn?
Horses hip at barrel then turn?
Or even deeper/farther horses hip past barrel? |

I don't know about everyone else but I have to go deep as in his hip at the barrel on my guy or we will drag it down on the back side.

| As deep as he will allow me, lol! My rollback style horse is incredibly ratey. I don't usually kick around a barrel, but I always give him an extra nudge on the backside to keep forward motion and to keep him from knocking it leaving. |

Location: Oklahoma | I go as far as my leg by the barrel, but mine isn't real ratey, and he's pretty long strided. Plus, he's very honest, so I don't have to worry about knocking. |

Location: texas | Well my 4yo that i am patterning is "rollback"
And i am having to take her real deep, she is sliding in and planting that inside leg and firing out hard
Wasnt until last night at practice that i realized how far/deep i am going to have to take her...... I was taking her just until right past my leg and she pulling off on backside bc she wasnt able to "rollback" like she needes to....
Its a weird feeling tho, feel like she is not prepared for the turn, i am driving her in there than bam turn :/
My other is all run, so i am always managing her speed, gotta throttle her down lol |

| Depends on the size of the horse thats rolling back. A big 15.3-16hh horse will need more room and push by than a smaller one. |

| My rollback style is a big guy 16 hh and a free runner, I usually sit when his nose is even with the barrel (He takes a long time to rate, he has a huge stride) and keep my inside leg in him, and almost neck rein him, he's a Reiner and if you get too much nose he swings his hip out, so I've found if I keep my hand huger on the rein he keeps his body straight and really plants and turns. He's unique, I gotta say that!
But when you ride him right he's super fun! :)

Location: MD | My big, rollback style guy is a legitimate 16.3hh. He's got a huge stride and runs pretty free, so I actually call oh him a bit earlier than I would most horses who work like him. The difference is that even though I do call on him a 2 strides before the first, a stride before the 2nd and 2 strides before the third, I keep riding him forward. I have to at least get to me to the 2nd and 3rd and his hip by the 1st, or he's coming back over them.

As deep as possible is right!
Here's a video of Clifford, who has a bit of a rollback style, is extremely ratey indoors and will drag barrels over leaving like nobody's business if I don't get his hip past the barrel before he sets.

In this one, you can see how far past the second barrel we were but still drug it over leaving with his side. So frustrating. This horse is teaching me to perfect the Lisa Lockhart/Jeanne Anderson leg lift, that's for sure, and sometimes even that isn't enough to get past the barrels indoors.

| I had this same question! My horse is very ratey and I have always gone with my leg getting by it but she tends to come off wide when we run especially the first and I think it's because she's stepping out to avoid hitting the barrel so I think I need to drive her hip past.
I have been practicing a little this week and I think it's really helping so far. She's been to the point of turning on top of the barrel or even trying before we get there lately even though I am still pushing her into the pocket. It's been all I can do to get her by especially on the third in the one arena we run in they use the same pattern in one association but put the third ten foot farther down and she just wants to turn before we get there lol. In practice I have been really exaggerating going deeper when we are just trotting but just getting the hip by if we are going faster and really trying to come out straight. I think me looking to make sure the hip is by is helping me already be in a better position to turn my shoulders and pop around out of the turn, or at least I hope because I have been having a hard time with that.
I am also trying to move my feet just a little through the turns and I think that's helping too just little bumps to encourage her to make a snappy turn and not rate so very hard and slow so much. I am not a very aggressive rider but she really needs me to be. |

Yes this exactly....
When my girlfriends watching me work my 4yo, they pointed out same thing...
Go deeper so she can slide that inside leg up in there and then get out, i was riding her to my leg, but i will have to take her to her hip....
And yes she was pulling off a tiny bit w only taking her to my leg, and thats what my girls pointed out |

Our 1st barrel is more bendy but the 2nd and 3rd are definitely in and out. Just the way he is. |

Location: Indiana | With my horse I try to get at least to his hip before we roll back. If not he will come right back over the top of it. He's the type of horse that the harder you push the better he runs and turns. |

None of mine carry a lot of bend in their ribs around the barrels. My BIG sorrel, Streak, is trying to have the most bend of my 4 but he's still fairly straight. There are no Marthas in my string, that's for sure. lol.
I try to get just a tiny bit of bend in the ribs so we don't drag as many barrels over leaving but I also don't like a ton of bend as I think that's where you get into trouble on rodeo ground. Here's a few pics of Cliff turning the 2nd barrel last spring that maybe show his body shape through the turn.
