Who has severe TMJ pain for their selves on here? What options did your doctors or dentists give you to fix or control it? I have two doctors with VERY different stances on how to fix a displaced disc in my jaw. Just looking for others experiences. Thank you

I have major TMJ issues and have seen several specialists so feel free to message me. I have had a surgery once to fix the displaced disc so I may be able to provide insight.

I am a dental hygienist... At both practices I work at it is recommended to figure out what is causing your pain. Is it because of clenching and grinding which causes inflammation of the TMJ and corresponding muscles? Is it due to your bite and the way your teeth occlude/fit together? For clenching the proper treatment would be a night guard to protect your teeth and allow space between them to relieve the pressure and force off of your TMJ. A lot of times a clencher will have visible wear on their teeth. If it is a bite/ occlusion problem the proper treatment would be braces. Braces are not to just make your teeth straight and pretty, they are to align your teeth up so your TMJ and teeth function in a healthy manner. Jaw surgery is only recommended by an othrodontist if it will allow your bite to function better with braces since they go hand in hand..

I have a splint to wear at night and it doesn't seem to help much. Doctor says my muscles are out of alignment now because they are changing to accomodate my incorrect bite. I have a slipped disc on one side and can not bite straight down now. He is wanting to do an arthroscopic surgery to pull the cartilage up and pin it in place so my disc won't slip anymore. Then he wants me to wear my splint for 3-6 months 24/7 followed up by braces to finish it off.
I was just trying to see what all everyone else had done and if anyone had also had the surgery.
Thank you all

My dad has been having issues because of an under bite. Apparently, over the years it has gotten worse and he was beginning to chip his teeth at night. They first had him try using a mouthpiece at night without change. They graduated to braces. And, I believe, next year they will be attempting a surgery to detach his jaw and reset it. Makes me squeamish just thinking about it.
