I base my opinion on all the people I know in Oklahoma of all places who don't give one flip about rodeo.

ERA's attorneys have a New York office with one of them having it as his primary office. I'm sure they have friends at the Times like most bigger firms do (or at least contacts to get them in).

He was a true showman. Flamboyant is certainly the most accurate term for his rodeo career. I didn't meet him until years later when he was in the car business in Arizona.
