My ratey little horse is turning as soon as her shoulder gets to the pocket or even sooner even though I am still asking her to go forward! I am trying so hard to drive her forward, get her hip past the barrel and she's dropping herself onto my leg and hand and just turning where she wants to. I have my inside rein picked up bumping asking for bend and inside leg on her and she's stiffening and dropping anyway. In slow work I have been pushing her way deeper into the pocket and making sure she is bent so it's really frustrating that she's not listening when we run! What should I be doing differently?

On the second and third ltraight and go to the fence at a trot two handed countercircle the opposite way you would turn and go to the third when there is no anticipation go back to turning when your horses hip is buy it

I would quit lifting on the face, keep the horse square, drive with both legs till you reach your point then bump with inside leg then allow to turn.

I am trying to lift to keep her square so her shoulder is not dropping to turn so soon, but watching the video you are right as soon as I picked up to lift she turned ??! She kinda wants to come in really tight on the barrel and take a big pocket on the back and come out wide. You think if I let her do that but get in deeper she will be able to make a nice turn or do I need to get her out farther coming in to make a nice turn?

Some horses as soon as you lift, your weight shifts to the outside, then the horse needs to compensate and drop to the inside to balance.

All you can do is try it a fee times to get off of the face ride square use your leg and allow your horse to turn and see how it goes

New problem that wasn't there before?

My older horse started to drop his shoulder and anticipate the turn when his hocks hurt. If I did manage to keep him picked up and get past, he'd bow off the turn. He was anticipating the pain and wanting the get it over with vs working properly. Just something to consider, especially if the issue wasn't there before and now is.

Mine also wAs doing this he had been trained to turn when his shoulder was at the barrel, i started him all over and we still haven't ran hard I've just been trying to get him to go by the barrel he was also dumping on his front end he couldn't use his rear end at all it's been a real challenge his saddle also didn't fit so i e ordered a new one, had his teeth done just keep working on it.

My mare started doing this and my trainer taught me to use my outside rein longer...not hold her off just bump with it before you drop to your horn. To get a feel for it, start at your first barrel and ride to the second. Go straight to the wall at #2 and stop. This will force you to keep them square with the outside rein. Then turn away from your barrel and go do it again. When they do what you want (go to the fence and stop straight) then then next time through go around the barrel and finish your pattern. This drill keeps my mare square and on her hind end through her turns.

I wanted to come back and say my trainer is big on telling your horse what to do vs telling them what not to do. Instead of telling them/thinking "don't turn yet" tell them/think "stay straight, now turn."

Stay two handed as long as possible to keep her body straight, then either drop your hand, or lift, howevery you do it.  It doesn't sound like she's going to run by a barrel.
Also, make sure you are looking at a point on the wall/fence so that your body is straight as well.  I'm sure when she feels you sit, she's turning. Do NOT look AT the barrel.

This could be caused by any number of things. Rule out soreness. This is why my horses are on a maintenance schedule rather than waiting until I start having problems. Make sure you keep riding the horse through the turn. It is so easy to get ourselves ready for a turn that we quit riding. Make sure that the horse moves off your leg. Get some leg in him as you get to the barrel and move his body over.

So many people don't get those basics refined before adding speed and they do not have the benefits that basics provide. I can get my leg in the paint in my avatar when he is running wide open. He will move half way across the arena.

Had one do this...watched a video of my runs...realized horse was turning when I switched hands ...I'd run in 2 handed go to 1 rein around 1st...come out of 1st and hussle to 2nd with both hands on reins then switch hands to hold horn around barrel around 2nd and 3rd...she'd always anticipate turns soon as I switched hands so once I started waiting and driving her just a half stride past barrel I'd switch hands then and she'd never run by one.

How much did your times improve i used to turn one when my leg was at the barrel now I'm driving there hip to the barrel i hope this method is faster how much pocket are you giving ? I've been playing with this and on my second and third I've been trying a three foot pocket

I agree with what some have already said. If she's real bad, I would do slow work loping past the barrel and stopping and pivoting the opposite direction and continue the pattern that way. Do that until she stops anticipating and once she quits, lope big circles around the barrels and be done. That way she doesn't attempt your exercise at a run XD Also, make sure you are sitting square with 2 hands driving forward with even pressure in both stirrups and not accidently getting ready for her to dive in. I noticed when my mare started anticipating I would start to anticipate her anticipation lol.
