Extreme Veteran Posts: 304 Location: Up and over to the right	Has anyone ever fed a handful of (soaked) alfalfa cubes before a run to an ulcer-prone horse? I suspect my horse has ulcers and he gets a small bucket of alfalfa forage with meals but he's a bit girthy and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this method!

Expert Posts: 4766 Location: Bandera, TX	A handful of cubes or two handfuls of alfalfa. Sure helps to prevent the slosh that occurs on a horse setting at the first barrel. I feel a more powerful turn from horses that have the coating on their stomach than those that get a burn from the gastric juices hitting the squamous mucosa. If I get a horse in thats been running up the fence on the first I will feed alfalfa and coat that stomach before working them. If they work then I suggest the scope so the humans can do their part in holping the horse.

The Resident Destroyer of Liberal Logic Location: PNW	My guy is on an alfalfa-based diet and hates running on an empty tummy. He has been scoped, treated, etc. and is totally ulcer-free. At races he has a bag of alfalfa in front of him constantly, and at home he has alfalfa free-choice while out in a 20 acre pasture.

Expert Posts: 2685	I prefer baled alfalfa but if I can't get ahold of any good stuff I'll use cubes. My horses get a hay bag 24/7 while on the road accept I take it away about 20 mins before and they get 1/2 scoop (about 2 handfuls) of cubes soaked. I have a mare that is majorly ulcer prone who also gets omeprazole when hauling so I treat everyone like they are ulcer prone but only she gets the meds.
