| We are shopping around for a truck and I'm soooooooo stressed at this point. We have been looking high and low and deals are few and far between. ....right now we are looking at a 2002 f350 crew cab 4x4 diesel 7.3 has everything we could ever want, 1 owner, clean carfax.....but it has 200,000 miles. With a 1 year warranty that covers absolutely everything we have them down to 14,500 the truck NADA at 13000. Should I run away...do I need a diesel hauling 2-3 days a week with 45 min tow is about 8,000 pounds with the occasional 12,000.....will this truck (mind you we are taking it to a diesel machanic to get checked) fart out on me.

Location: Fairfield, IA | I don't think it sounds like a bad deal. The Ford 7.3 is a pretty reliable motor and are getting harder to come by; I had a 1997 with the same motor that had close to 300,000 miles on it when I got rid of it.
the 7.3 motor is much better than the 6.0 that replaced it.

They are pretty reliable. I would not be afraid of one with that many miles. There are getting to be a lot of them with over 300,000 miles on them. Just a note. On any brand of the newer diesels when you have a problem with them the fix bill will be what you are going to pay for this truck. |

| Definitely a reasonable price in this market. I wouldn't bat an eye at that price for that truck. My friend and her hubby both have the 2000 F250 7.3 each with over 300,000 on them. Both have had to have transmission work done, and miscellaneous little things, but what truck doesn't get stuff replaced with that many miles, and they both pull a lot. Her hubby own an HVAC company, so is pulling a/c units and materials constantly and the bed loaded down with tools. She pulls a 3H GN loaded pretty heavy from March-November.

Location: Kansas | That actually isn't a bad price. Are you dead set on a one ton? I have a 2006 f-250 with 254,000 on it. I paid $12,000 for it with 234,000. I haul about 7,500lbs with my trailer and horses loaded down. It pulls with ease. But my truck is a 3/4 ton. |

Location: Kentucky | Our 7.3 has 220k on it and is very reliable.
Our 6.0 has 240k, and after bulletproofing, has been reliable also.
If a vehicle is maintained, mileage doesn't scare me. We have an Escape with 340k miles on it and still going strong. |

Is it an automatic transmission? That will likely be the biggest concern. Also, it will be hard to start in the very cold most likely. Other than that you will be looking at normal repairs...brakes, shocks, door and window actuators, vacuum pump, alternator, mirrors, seats and interior wear, etc.
The 7.3 maintained well and not used really hard should last a long time. I just sold a 3/4 ton 7.3 with 243,000 miles yesterday. I am confident this motor would have lasted me many more years. |

Location: Roping pen | I would be careful counting on the "covers everything" warranty too much. On a vehicle with that mileage, they have a lot of room for the old "abuse" excuse to not cover anything. My experience with these warranties have not been good.
I also 2nd the transmission concern. IF it has had the fluid/filter changed and not towed a lot you could be ok.
Also, there is a cross over pipe that delivers coolant between the heads that rusts thru
(not sure on this year) and these pickups could also need new battery cables as they corrode fairly quickly. Along with that sensor, and glow plug solenoid issues, most all repairs are easy and economical to repair. Possible a starter will be needed if not replaced already as 200k seems to be when they start to fail.

| Look at the fuel injectors, my cousin has a 2002 and a 2006 both bought used, and both had to have injectors replaced within the first year..
I have heard a lot of the 6.0 and 7.3 fords need fuel injectors replaced. |

Holy ish. We got a new set from Full Force Diesel. I think we paid $1600 for 160cc. My husband installed them, so we were just out parts. They do take cores.

| I have a 99 F350 super duty dually with the 7.3 motor with 297900 miles on it. My husband used to use it strictly for hauling big loads and our horses. It has held up well until now but that's because we haven't had any $$ and it has fallen into a bit of disrepair. Will have injector #3 replaced and the glow plugs/glow plug relay redone and we will sell it. If it was in better shape we could ask what we want since I can't go anywhwere without people asking to buy it...but we will still get a respectable amount for it in the current condition. Great trucks...I also agree that the "covers everything" warranty won't do you much good. Had one of those on my Dodge. Had to declare bankruptcy in order to get anything positive out of the experience. Learn from my mistake. DON'T trust (or get) the warranty. Waste of $$$!!! |

Location: Southeast Louisiana | If it's been well maintained, that mileage wouldn't scare me at all. Mine has 333000, it's a 2000 7.3 F250. Mostly towing miles. No transmission troubles and it has actually surprised me by starting right up on the last couple of cold days we had. Although, we don't get that cold here. I love my truck. It will be going in the shop soon for some front end work, but it's pretty much normal wear and tear for the miles it has on it. |

They aren't for everybody. If you are using it as a daily driver, there are some issues that take some getting used to. The older 7.3's are noisy. You will have to turn it off every time you try to order something at a drive through. And, you do get some more noise inside the truck than a gas truck. You have to wait for the glow plugs to heat up and you really should let it warm up if it's been sitting a while, so you can't just hop in and start it up and take off like in a gas truck. The main reason I want a four wheel drive on my diesel is because the front end is very heavy. You will get stuck in a muddy parking lot with a horse trailer if you don't have four wheel drive. Oh, and harder to park. My gas truck is 4wd also, but the steering is more like a car. They aren't as comfortable as a gas truck. You most likely won't get a Cadillac ride in it, but the suspension is heavy and can handle heavier loads in unfavorable conditions. I've seen a few of them wrecked, and as long as you wear your seatbelt, you are much better protected, in my opinion. The older ones especially. That's why I feel safe in mine. That thing is a beast!
e.t.a: if you're on the doomsday prepper thread, you can run farm fuel in that truck you're looking at... if it all goes bad! Don't DO it, just know that you can if you gotta get fuel. If you try it, and get caught with dyed fuel in your tank, it's a BIG fine.

I bought it brand new as I wanted the manual transmission and you can't get one anymore. It was bought for my daughters to pull the trailer and then they went to college and got jobs so now. It only gets about 4,000 miles a year on it.
