Ok I was side lined for about 8 months and have been back riding and doing light racing for 3 months. i am finding it difficult to get back in shape and lose the 15 lbs I gained. I am noticing how out of shape more in my runs then in just riding. Any ideas or tips are greatly appreciated. Side note I already eat a healthy high protein low carb diet.
Thanks

Just keep working on it! When I cam back after a 6 month haidas of doing absolutely nothing but light walking I could really tell I had lost a lot of core strength and gained more inches than I had thought. I worked out for 30 minutes a day 3 or 4 days a week and really focused on core and legs.

I would suggest starting a weight training regimen. If you have access to a gym you could get a few sessions with a personal trainer to get you started - or there are a lot of Youtube videos and apps that you can download that have programs. I have a book called "Thinner, Leaner, Stronger" by Michael Matthews that is geared towards women that has a lot of GOOD food and workout information in it.
I had my son via C-section and I thought I would get my core back just by getting back to work and riding...uh no! I started seriously working out and have not derailed for the past 14 weeks and am starting to see a the start of a 6 pack and know if I ate better (darn Christmas cookies!) it would really show!
Good luck! Put in the time and you'll see results!

70% diet and 30% exercise, in my opinion. Eat healthy, only have once a week cheat days, don't go out to eat if you can help it, do cardio and weight work if you can. Weights will be better for your body but cardio is just as good for us horseback riders!!

I had a c section and gained 44 lbs being pregnant I was off riding for only 5 weeks but stopped competing and really doing anything more than walking or jogging around after I was 6 months along. I thought it would be easier to come back then it was!! I was super ambitious and paid to enter two different associations that I had to get qualified runs in to make finals in a very short amount of time because I had missed most of the season. I had the surgery in mid February got cleared to ride end of March and started running at the end of May and had to be qualified by August for one and September for the other. It was rough! My balance took forever to come back, I was behind my horse who just wanted to run run run and wasn't really wanting to work with me. I ended up spending a ton of money not winning a dime back and losing a ton of confidence. It was so frustrating! I wish I had taken things way slower! I took the next year and just ran in a gaming association that's $2 a run. By Feburary, so a year after, we were finally working as a team and running personal bests. And by April I had enough confidence to enter a race and we picked up a check in both goes.

Just take it slow and don't have too many expectations. I hated my body with all the weight gain and started working out everyday just caring between yoga, cardio, body weight excercises I found on Pinterest and eating healthier. I ended up losing 60lbs and looking really fit after probably 7 months. I had to buy new clothes because my pre pregnancy clothes were too big lol.

I have been riding poorly the last few times and that is a terrible feeling for sure!! It gets harder as we age and have children!! My teenage son ran and grabbed me today throwing me on the couch (just playing) and my back and neck popped! Usually I can wrestle with him and have a chance of winning, but I have a new baby which destroyed any muscle I used to have lol!!

Kettlebell exercises will work quicker than anything for building strength & core strength. There's one exercise where you get in plank position and you lift a weight up -- that's one of the best ones for a strong cor?e.

Riding in two point for extended periods of time, and riding english if you have access to an english saddle.

Riding with your eyes closed - in a pen of course.
