| tell me your experiences. The mare I bought that ran on the track on the injectable "regu-mate" (starts with an A) has been off of it about 2 months (I got her a few days ago). Sucks air really bad when she exerts herself. I noticed it this morning lunging her. Then she didn't "expel" the air until a few hours later when I turned her out. After she ran around a bit and played I noticed her urinate (or try to) twice in a short amount of time. There are no male horses within miles of her. I have never had a mare that sucked air. |

Location: NE TX | I have a friend that doesn't matter who it is he gets it done on ALL his mares. I got mine done and she does seem less agitated. Have another friend that had her mare done and you would've thought she was a gelding. If she was on injectable talk to your vet he/she may suggest caslicks to help with wind sucking and injectable to help with heat cycles |

I am very surprised if she came off the track that she is not already caslicked. I am taking one next week to have her caslicked and the one at the trainer was caslicked a year ago.
If they suck air they have a problem with infections

99 % do that strange keeps them from getting infected make sure she clean no infect the sew her up |

| I agree that coming off the track she would most likely already have a caslicks. If she doesn't have one, get it done. It's not a big deal to have a mare sutured. |

Yes, I realize that. I grew up on the track. Caslicks in fillies are a standard operating procedure, just like removing wolf teeth. So if she was run without one, I just wondering what kind offly by night trainer she was with. |

| thanks y'all. She does not have one. I didn't know most track people did to their mares. Makes sense though. I was just wondering if having her sewn up would take away the need for the drug? I would assume the air would cause a lot of discomfort altering the horses performance and attitude and those were the owners reasons for the injectable.
Yes I do work at a vet. We use regumate only from what I have experienced (2 years here). I have never used that injectable on a mare here (or anywhere), packaged it for a client or heard a client talk with a vet about it. My boss is big on performance lameness and colics (surgeries). His 2 partners are the repro guys and I only help them when they are slammed. We do a lot of recip ET work, a little bit of breed to carry but mostly ET. |

Location: At the race track with Ah Dee Ohs | Most race horse trainers do caslicks on the fillies, if they don't their idiots. Our fillies are done in their late yearling year before breaking starts if they are to run as a 2 yr old. |

| Caslick will obviously stop the wind sucking, which does cause pain. It will also help prevent infection. I do it to any mares I own.
As far as the altrenogest, you can only speculate whether the reasons they felt she needed it (poor behavior) was due to hormones or, pain from sucking wind.
If you caslick her, the painful wind sucking stops. And if her behavior issues stop, you have your answer. If they don't, you know it may be hormonal.
Caslicks and hormones are not related.
