what I need covered:

Horse A: Tendon (horse with a bow) currently SmartFlex Rehab (61.95/mo)
Gastric (horse with ulcer issues) currently SmartGI (49.95/mo)
Joint (basic support) included in SmartFlex Rehab
Horse B: Hormone (horse that doesn't cope with her heat cycles well) SmartMare Harmony (21.95/mo)
Joints (basic support) SmartFlex Senior (38.98/mo)

I currently use smartpak covering all bases is almost $200/ mo for 2 horses. Is that pretty much what its going to cost me for good quality stuff or do you guys know of something more cost effective. I would like to stay comparable quality wise obviously and what I'm using works but $100 per horse is kinda high for supplements alone.

I spoke with a Platinum rep and the quote I got for the above is almost $300/mo for the 2 horses.

You can choose to do the supplement wizard on Smart Pak and then choose the off brand supplements instead of what is recommended and it will drop the price for you.

Go to Forco for the gut and some raspberry leaves for the mare (same as any mare product). I'd just stop the joint supplements as they are not really proven to cause much improvement. Id go to an injectable like Pentosan or Adequan. You should average out to 75-100 a horse, maybe less if you do that.

Have you tried Santa Cruz? I think that is who I bought my Platinum from way back - probably 4 years ago. They make their own version of Platinum now. It seems to me that they were less expensive.

I have been recently converted to Cur-Ost. Has done wonders for my horse! They do have a promo on right now too. It helps a multiple of issues. Good luck!

I second Cur-Ost, I re-vamped my horses nutritional program and it is actually cheaper in the long run compared to what I was feeding before.

Way cheaper in comparison to everything I was having to buy before.  Everyone knows i'm a Cur-OST junkie.  It's something I will never be without for my horses or for myself.  The cost is well worth the benefit you get from it!

I have 2 on Total Support, one on Total Support and Adapt & Calm, and one on Stomach and Adapt & Calm.  When I first started this process, I only had one horse on the product and he got the Total Support, Immune & Repair, and Adapt & Calm for 90 days, then I was able to back him down to the Adapt & Calm.

One thing to remember, is that those of us choosing this route no longer buy expensive processed feed, nor do we need any other supplements for joints, pro or prebiotics, ulcers or anything else.  My horse gets only a half scoop of oats once a daily, alfalfa twice daily, and a couple cups of rice bran and that is it.  Nothing else whatsoever.  So while we are paying $120 per month, per horse for the Cur-OST, we are saving money on our overall program through no longer needing other supplements or processed feed.  I am blown away how my horse continues to look better just when I think he can't improve anymore.  I haven't ridden but a handful of times since the time changed back in November, but he looks fit as a fiddle and his coat is reflective.

what I need covered:

I would look closer at smart flex rehab, what does the product claim to do? As nothing I have read specifically targets promoting healing in tendons. I am talking about scientific evidence. I would stop that one completely, and focus on treatment.

cold hosing/game ready/ice boots poulticing, bot quick wraps/magnetics

For the gastric, I don't believe in treating daily as there are long term effects. After the ulcers are healed, I would change diet.

24/7 feed invest in a slow feeder, minimal oats less then 2 lbs, flax, and if need more fat add oil. For the first month I may give probiotics, I like omega alpha just to get the hind gut working again.

To reduce the reoccurance of ulcers, I would give a stomach soother 20 min before saddling/trailering/competing any antacid will work, I know I can get a gallon for 20, the dose is 30-60 ml. This is where the research is going right now as the best way to prevent ulcers.

For the hormone, as many have said I would try raspberry leaves, or look at a medical solution such as the disc under the skin, the marble, and eliminating any reason why she is marish. If you are feeding a product with soy as an ingredient the excess estrogen may be making her cranky, human studies are showing people who are drinking soy milk have higher estrogen levels then people who drink milk.

As for a cheap joint product, tight joints plus seems to be reasonable. I use lubrysin, but I think it works out to 2/day/horse

The most economical I would say is injectable glucosamine weekly, I pay 20/bottle which gives me 10 doses and I give it weekly. When I first started using it I noticed the windpuffs were gone immediately. This will also help the bowed tendon as it inhibits the inflammatory process.

Animal Element Performance Detox is a very affordable yet great all over type of supplement.

The Performance Detox is specially formulated to assist in the removal of these toxins using Zeolite (Clinoptilolite), Diatomaceous Earth, Organic Kelp, Spirulina, Organic Raspberry Leaf, MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), Organic Hawthorn, Fenugreek, Organic Turmeric, Hyaluronic Acid (120 mg per day). All high quality, human grade ingredients with NO Fillers!
Great to detoxify and improve health. Also great for Coat, Hooves, and Joints! Also Improves Topline.

Zeolite is composed of a unique group of minerals with a naturally-occurring negative charge, organized in a honeycombed matrix. This gives Zeolite the ability to attract and trap into the cage like structure, heavy metals and toxins. Zeolite is formed from ash deposits originating from ancient volcanic eruptions into neighboring seas and lakes.

Our organic Kelp contains over 60 minerals, 17 complex amino acids and a vitamin complex.

Chlorella is a single-cell, fresh water algae that is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, chlorella growth factor, and other beneficial substances.

Curcumin, a constituent of Turmeric and a spice used in Indian curry dishes, is an effective antioxidant and is known to induce the enzymes of glutathione-linked detoxification pathways

Hawthorn acts as a vasodilator, increasing blood supply to the heat and improving circulation to the extremities.

I buy the Platinum Performance that is about $144. I think it is 25 lbs. With the shipping added in it costs me a about $1 a day per horse. Feeding it to four horses the container lasts two months.

For the horse with hormone issues, crushed raspberry leaves which is what most of the prepackaged supplements are. Order from one of the online herb stores (herb store.com or morethanalive.com) for cheap.

I highly suggest THE muscle mass or performance. You will have to separate those into 2 bags, but they are 80 dose and it will only cost you about $80 shipped each. That's only about $2/day for 2 horses.

I feed Actiflex for joints, but I currently have my geilding on performance with collagen (for tendons) and allergy. It's amazing how long the 80 dose lasts and it works.

I have heard a lot of good things about the CurOst and was suggested to try it on my gelding but I am confused how you pick what to use? This horse had allergy issues in the past so when I looked at it I assumed he would need that formula? Do you have to feed the Total as well as the other formulas or can you just feed whichever formula you want?

I have used the OxyGen in the past and I think I liked it. I say think because my horse looked awesome but he got so hot (he is not a hot horse at all) and I haven't decided if it was that or the grain he was on. He is parked at a round bale in snow right now so I haven't had the chance to experiment with it.
