QUESTION on favorite exercise for rear end.

My gelding has the ok to start riding again. Due to slight atrophy in hind quarter muscle
(combo stifle soreness and SI joint
) the vet recommended exercising him to build up those muscles.. Of course didn't say specifically what he recommended so I thought I'd ask you all.
My initial thoughts were riding him in general super collected
(asking for the lift in the rib cage in every gait, which will be not a ton of fun with him b/c he's 16 but we'll get through it
).. Then next thought was more backing with him to get the full stretch on those rear muscles? Once he gets rode for a few weeks possible even log him at a walk to add a little resistance and help possibly build up his hindquarters? We do it to all the colts and a little on the roping horses if they need it.
Need more ideas please and THANKS !!

Hills. Find a small hill and work up to some large ones. When we used to ride in the mountains every week my horses looked like J. Lo

Hills, logging, trot poles... you might think about a Pessoa or balanced training system? Did you get any parameters as to what he can handle?

no, the hubby took him... I will call tomorrow. What I gathered was 2 weeks of very light riding to just get the range of motion going and get him some air then start working him up and he is now able to be turned out in the pasture.. And he will run like a dang fool.. He doesn't want him entered for at least 60 days
(and I'll probably try for 90 b/c he's too nice to have another set back
)
I don't have many hills but I'll talk to my neighbor they didnt' plant wheat this year and she has about 500 acres of rolling hills that should be better than nothing.

The vet did layout a light routine. First two weeks ride 4x's/week; 20min slow and long trotting. Then full workouts and hills are ok. That's all I got as far as written instructions.
Any other favorites to share?

My horse show friends that show in Performance Halter and need that badonka donk back them up. They do it on the ground and just ask the horse to back up quite a ways. Sounds too boring to me. But the one was 4th in Am at the AQHA world show and that is her only secret. He has a halter bred sire and a cutting bred dam. She shows in the pleasure and english events and had this horse looking like a tank by backing him up.
