Location: Dearing, GA | I'm trying to put a price on a horse that could potentially be for sale. 15.2 bay gelding, will be 8 years old in March, small snip, branded on left shoulder. Loping a consistent pattern at home, ready to be pushed, just hasn't been hauled enough (due to no fault of his own- I currently don't own a truck!) to be considered finished yet. Loads great, stands for farrier, bathes, knows Clinton Anderson groundwork, etc. Very well behaved. Has pushed cattle, could also make a rope horse. He's Two Eyed Jack on top, Regers He Might on the bottom. His ONLY vice is that occasionally he will try to buck when you first lope. Catch his head and give him a little bump and its over. Or, lunge him before you get on.
How would you price this horse with his issue?
ETA: He has been exhibitioned a whole bunch, acts just fine away from home. However, since July he's only been 3 places due to me not having a truck.

I was kinda thinking 4 or 5K, but didn't know if that was unrealistic. I can be flexible. My biggest fear is the last time this horse was sold, he went for under $2,000 and ended up in a home where he wasn't taken care of. I don't want to do that again. |

Location: Buffalo, TX | So he's not a kids horse...and you can't haul him anywhere to show how he acts at a jackpot, so basically he's an 8 yr. old started, unhauled horse. If he's really good looking and rides good, I would think maybe around $2,000 tops. |

I think for 4-5K you will have to find someone to haul him to some jackpots for a potential buyer to see, or at least video him exhibitioning at a jackpot. |

He's been hauled a whole bunch, exhibitioned a whole bunch, acts just fine. He's only been hauled three times since July as of this year though, because I sold my truck. I'd take him anywhere, and don't have to worry about him. BUT you're right, he is not a kids horse. He is a good horse, has all the buttons, and I think he's pretty spiffy looking. |

I would start on the higher end and see if you can find someone to haul him to a jackpot for a potential buyer to try him there...those kind bring more, I think. |

| To give a comparison... I tried out a very well bred barrel prospect. Broke, quiet and beautiful. He was however, cold backed once in awhile. He was listed at $3500.
So IMO for something that is mediocre bred I would put him around $2500 at best. Again thats in my area so that may change things. |

Location: guthrie | Depends on how bad you want/need to sell. I have a 12 yo reg QH mare that is dead dog gentle.Supposed to know all the playday events. My husband (who is old and broke down) loves to ride her, I would put any one on her and trust her.I priced her and $5500 ,but don't HAVE to sell. If she sells fine if not thats fine too. I will ride her more come Spring.. So if you really like him and dont have/need to sell him, start high.. always easier to come down.

This is a good point. I don't NEED or even want to sell him, so I started at $4,000. If he doesn't sell, he doesn't sell and I'll just keep him for a bit longer and keep riding and working him. |

Yep as people say. A horse is worth what someone will pay for it.
I personally think the dead head playday horses are worth their weight in gold. If money werent an issue, I would pay 10k for a 3d horse that my niece could ride and learn on and be safe. Now someone else may only think that same horse is only worth half that. |
