Im looking for some insight on the Jeff Smith saddles and asking to compare a Coats original tree to a Jeff Smith. I have not seen one in person so im going off of pictures. The one i did see, im not sure what tree.    Im looking for a saddle that will sit me square and deep on my pockets when i need to. Im currently in a pozzi and hate it.

Talk to them about their C3 brand saddle by Jeff Smith. I rode one this past fall and put my Martin up for sale the next day. Have my c3 ordered and a countdown til its built and here. Its a deep secure seat but an incredibly balanced ride and I was able to get up and out of it without difficulty. Most importantly... for how deep it sits, I didn't feel jammed down into it with the stuck feeling. Very balanced feel.

I looked on his FB page and his website and the C3 isnt mentioned?  Is it that new? How does it differ from the 2 barrel racers he has currently?  Thanks for the help btw :

Hope that Herbie see's this thread, she loves the Jeff Smiths, she had her barrel saddles built on a cutter tree, and they were really sharp looking saddles, if she comes on anytime soon she will post pictures and she can tell you how they ride, I know that she likes the flat seat..

I haven't rode in a Coats so I can't compare the two, but there is NOTHING to dislike about the Jeff Smith on the BW tree! Sits you up square, you can move your feet wherever you need, close contact feel....etc etc.

Someone said the C3 is a line his wife rides in. If you go to her facebook page (I dont know her name off the top of my head) you can see pictures of the C3s.

I sent her a message; Chery Pinkston. I tried to look through her public pics and saw older used saddles on her horses and wasnt sure if those are the c3s or other types. Hoping to hear back from her.

Thank you STPG for your kind words.  :)  I don't know about wise.....just lots of trial and error until I found what I was looking for.  I never could find something that sat me balanced, kept my feed under me when I stood up, and fit my horse like I wanted.  Several years ago Bo Hill shared with me about the cutting saddles, and I sold everything and bought an old, worn out, Joey Jemison cutter and loved it.  The cutting saddles are hard to find in anything less than a 16" tree, but I snuck around and found the Joey.  Only thing I disliked was that it was really heavy and the skirts were long and really deep.  Wouldn't be a problem if I rode bigger horses, but on my gelding it was like he was wearing his daddy's clothes, it was just too big and long.  I live about an hour from Jeff Smith's shop and had seen his saddles continue to improve through the years and the cutters were really nice, so I had him build a cutting saddle that was single skirted with an in skirt rigging so it looked like a barrel saddle.  I ordered two that were almost exactly alike, both in 15" seats.  Now in a regular barrel saddle, I can ride anything from a 14 - 15, but probably truly a 14.5 would be about right, however in the cutter, the way it sits you, in the "pocket" I learned to appreciate the extra room and realized it put my feet right where they needed to be.

The Coats i've had i've actually owned twice and bought it back thinking it might set me up to jockey my horse a bit better and get more forward, but considering my gelding is built downhill a little bit, I spent more time up over his shoulder on the backside of the first than I did in my saddle.  That being said, on a horse that doesn't have that big move on the backside like my colt does, it probably would have been fine.   I felt like the Coats fit him nicely, but I felt like I was fighting it and it made me ride a little tighter than I needed to.

I love my Jeff Smith saddles.  I still have 2 and have considered selling one of them to have a more "custom" version built now that I know I love they way they ride.  I will attach a picture of my saddle here.  On this one, I had the hoofpick holder moved to the skirt and took the back billets and cinch off.  My colt is short bodied and at the time, he didn't appreciate a back cinch.  I've never had an issue with my saddle popping up, so I just never worried about putting it back on.

Here is a little bit better pic of the saddle so you can see the ground seat and pocket.

I've rode in both Coats, and Jeff Smith and chose to get a Tami Semas by Jeff Smith. both are great saddles but I felt like the Smith had me where I needed to be!
