So, I'll try to keep this short....
I ended up with a gelding this past summer that I knew nothing about, other than he was a "renegade".... lol.
I rode him for several months, figured out that he is super fancy broke, and very fast. Patterned on the barrels, and an excellent roping horse. I finally got the bill of sale on him in the mail a few weeks ago, and on his brand inspection is his AQHA registration number. I wasn't having luck with looking it up on AQHA's website, so I Googled it, and found out he's a son of A Classic Dash, and raced on the track. He does have a lip tattoo.
I never received his papers, and am not even sure who he is currently registered to, but I definitely am wanting to have all of his paperwork updated, as I'm looking to race him NBHA this year.
Will a bill of sale be enough proof of who he is? Not sure what my next step should be? Call AQHA? :(
I'm sure this could easily turn into a wild goose chase, just wondering if there's a simple solution? TIA for any advice.

I would call AQHA. I know for Jockey Club, when I inquired a bill of sale is sufficient but not sure about AQHA. I always thought whoeever the registered owner is had to sign the transfer. AQHA can sometimes pull some strings though. Call them. Good Luck

The owner to which the horse was last registered is the one who has to apply for lost papers. The AQHA website will have that. Also your horse does NOT have to be registered to run in NBHA. Does the horse even have a tattoo and does it match the number on the bill of sale? The bill of sale is not enough to get papers.

I would think whoever's name this horse is registered in would have to sign a transfer. I'm sure AQHA could give you that info. Good luck, sometimes these situations can be very frustrating.

He does have a tattoo under his upper lip - I had no idea he did until I got the bill of sale for him in the mail, and called my husband (who had him at roping practice) to have him look. I got his info from allbreedpedigree when I entered his AQHA # in Google.
I know he doesn't have to be registered to run NBHA, but I don't want to just run him under his barn name at the races.

Call AQHA to see who the person is that is on his Reg. papers.
Or if you want to post his Reg. number and I'm sure some one can look it up and see who his last owner is.

Just put the horse's registered name on the NBHA entry form. I run my horses with their barn name iif you are required to put a name. Too much trouble otherwise

His reg # on the bill of sale is 4486362. According to my research, his registered name is Heza Classic Mother. Would love to know who he's currently registered to! :)

Let me explain something to you. It is the seller's responsibility to transfer the horse's papers. If the seller has not complied with AQHA, they can be suspended. If a person , member or not, is suspended, they cannot race or compete in performance events. They cannot stand a stallion, breed a mare, register foals or have a horse transfered into their name. AQHA is cracking down on this practice because so many horses are sold and transfered years after they were sold. First of all, if I am looking at a horse and the paperwork is not in order I move on to the next horse. If I buy a horse that is sold as grade. I know it is grade and leave it at that. Papers are not going to make the horse run faster. If you want to verify this, get an AQHA handbook or call AQHA.

About 40 years ago, I bought a horse and transfered the horse immediately. I left out the date of sale. AQHA called the owner who in turn called me. She was not very happy because she showed a lot.

I'm not looking to get anyone in trouble with AQHA, and I don't have a problem with grade horses. But, he's the son of an All American Futurity winner, and I would hate for his own accomplishments to not be able to follow him throughout his lifetime as well just because I neglected to put the effort in to updating his papers.

You will not get in trouble with AQHA. The seller will. Is the horse a gelding? Really doesn't make a lot of difference.

The bill of sale is not enough.

People can sell horses and pull the papers, which means you can never get them.

People can sell horses while suspended and the transfer is invalid Aqha will not release the papers, this is what I read in the Aqha rule book. If suspended they cannot register, fill out stallion reports, etc either.

Call Aqha with the registration number, and they can send the last recorded owners a letter requesting they sign a transfer. The last recorded owner can ignore the letter, or refuse it, and can also report the horse as stolen then you are in big trouble

I had kind of a similar situation I bought a gelding I knew was registered but the seller lost the papers before he transferred him into his name and couldn't even remember his registered name so I had a fun time finding anything out. I remembered the breeder sending him in for training before the seller had him and was able to contact them and they remembered the gelding and gave me the name and he was still in their name so all they had to do was request a new copy and then transfer it to my name. It was a huge mess because they wouldn't believe I purchased the horse without talking to the trainer they sold him to and she was a total flake about calling them back or anything. Took me about a year because of her uhg lol but I finally did get them. Hope it's easier for you lol!

If the last recorded owner doesn't have the papers and is willing to sign a transfer, they may be willing to sign a duplicate record request.

What I was saying there may be a reason the op doesn't have the papers.

They could have been pulled by the last recorded owner, I know lots of people who do this if the horse is a flop.

The last recorded owner could have sold the horse while suspended, and in the rule book I couldn't find out if Aqha will ever release the papers to a different owner. To me how the rule is worded, if a person sells a horse while suspended, Aqha pulls the papers and they are never given back.

The closest I can tell, the listed owner on his papers sold him while she would have still been in high school. I was able to pm her mother via Facebook, but haven't gotten a response back from her yet. The person listed on his brand inspection is not her, but he is listed in my local phone book, so I think my next step will be to contact him, and see if he had ever received the papers - he wrote down the registration number on the brand inspection, so.... maybe? Grrrr! What a headache! Thanks to all of you for your advice - I was able to figure out a lot more of his info with that registration lookup :)

You are smarter than that and know better ... so stop being lazy and sign in their registered names even if you have to make the horse a business card so you can remember their names .... lol

There will be no record of your wins etc etc when you decide to sell them. Or need x dollars to pay for your funeral after you kick the can ...
lol

You see comments all the time from frustrated buyers trying to validate an owner's claims of having a winning barrel horse .... so get with the program and I will even loan you a pen with ink in it to use when signing in ....

Sometimes you remind me of an auto mechanic that will not keep his own cars in running shape ....... you are an experienced and very good photographer and have expensive equipment to back it up ...... yet all we see are blurred pictures from your goofy cell phone ... lol
(I couldn't help myself .. I just had to add this... hehehee)

Now barrelhorse you know I never win any money, come on now. I want to win I get my trainer to ride. The important stuff requires the horse's name. Laughing. You can be sure that Miss Mia will have her registered name on everything. By the way, when I buy from you, paperwork is in order and I have my papers back in a week.
