I have a horse that has a very slow growing tail. He had a nice long tail until fly season, now it is at his hocks.  Does anyone have any tricks to promote growth?  I have fed biotin for several months, but I'm not seeing much change.

I've heard some bad things about MTG, so I've been leery to try it.

I've struggled with this for years, I've used mtg, cowboy magic, and anything I could. But the only thing that has worked for me is to keep their tails braided 24/7. I redo the braid once or twice a week, and since I started doing that their tails are touching the ground. I start the braid just below the tailbone, and stop 3-4 inches from the end. It works for me! Good luck! :)

I have it braided and in a tail bag now.  It just doesn't seem like it has grown at all since this summer.

Try increasing blood circulation to the tail by combing/brushing the bottom side of the actual tail. When i comb my horse's tail I "massage" the tail by brushing it.

We did MTG and fed msm to several one winter when we had horses stalled. We took measurements before we started on again after about a month and a half. They were also kept braided and in tail bags. We grew about 3 inches of tail in that month or so.

My mare hates her tail braided. I love to braid but she will sit there and swish it. Its just long enough when we ride she will swish it and it pops me.

Of all the many wonderful things my CJ has done for my 3, I haven't really noticed tail and mane growth to be one of them. The braiding thing over this winter did make a difference tho I think. And like someone else mentioned, my mare popped the poo out of me today with her tail braid.

A trainer I knew always had horses wth beautiful tails. U mentioned it once and he said he swore by hosing them frequently. I never tried it but he said it really worked to hose them off constantly.

all my horses have nice tails, never let them step on them while they are turned out and dont comb them all the time i usesally tie a knot in the tail and them put vetwrap over that and leave them along and wash and condition them with conditioner with slik proteins will keep knots out. my 1-d mare i would do this thru winter like from october and by april i would have 6 inches on the ground.

Braid it and keep it braided not a tight braid but just regular from the bone down...and then don't wash it or brush it too often just when the braid gets loose or falls out rebraid it ...comb it out with your fingers more than just using a brush every time ...also feed msm..per label..i get the Animed brand it's pure with no fillers and cheap..just watch it can make a hrs gassy if it does cut it back a little less than required dose on label bit it'll help a lot...also feed some sort of flax supplement....

Thank you for the replies.  Of course it is the horse that gets hauled that would have the ugly short tail, the others have long tails!

I second this. I started my mare on Platinum and both her mane and tail have grown a lot

I fed my guys Biomane and it made a HUGE difference in both of them- it's a pelleted feed supplement, so it's super easy to feed! http://biomane.com

I think genetics has some to do with it. I have one on no supplements and she has the biggest mess of hair. I call her Fabio. But the one I put on platinum had wispy mane and average tail. Her mane is pretty now and tail is ground length. But honestly I like short manes and tails just above the ground!  Lol. Less work. But I still clip a bridle path. Gasp!!

You know, I can tell a thickness difference. . . My mare's mane has definitely gotten thicker and longer this winter but I assumed it was the braiding. Maybe it just took a while (they've been on CJ for several years). Our paint who isn't on CJ has the longest and prettiest mane/tail of the 5. And tries his hardest to keep them coated in mud and tied in knots!
