I can't get my guys to stop when I try to clean them...........Any suggestions other than just letting the vet do it?

No I do not. My gelding was getting stifle injections and stood perfectly still, then immediately after the assistant went to clean his sheath and with all the drugs he still threatned her! go ahead and stick that big fat needle in my joint but DO NOT touch my pee pee LOL

Has he been cleaned recently? A friends gelding tried to kill us when we went to do his. The vet came out and tranq'd him to do it - HUGE beans, went I say thumb size I'm not talking about a child's thumb. Poor dude. Since then he's allowed us to check him without fuss. I check all mine on a regular basis to both keep up on any beans and to desensitize them to the process. Basically if they pee and drop in front of me they get fondled.

Ditto.

Mine was a little....uncomfortable with me doing it at first.....would kind of raise a leg but not try anything. Now he drops and I get to work and give him treats after and he's cool. He's pretty laid back though.

I'd have vet do it to start you off clean and then work with him everyday.....even if it's just brushing him up high...

Horse people are weird haha!!

If I get a kicker, I'll tie up a leg. Usually a front leg will do it, but some of them you have to tie up a back one on the other side from where you're working. Coop will pick up a leg but not kick. It's more like he's responding to being goosed or something.

My guys get cleaned by my vet once a year. They never have much of a bean, so at this point, the vet says once a year is fine.

Typically, we'll have them sedated to do their teeth, and then do the sheath directly after while they are still sedated.
My horse Red is fine with it.
Shotgun? Oh no. While sedated, he also has to be twitched, or he'll kick. And it's the strangest thing b/c he's the most laid back horse ever, but that is the one thing he hates (having his sheath cleaned).

So I will never attempt to try to do him myself, when he acts that way while sedated. I guess some just don't like it??

On a side note, I can do anything else with him "back there" and he's fine. Last year, I had to pick off about 50 ticks (not joking) from around his parts and up way under his legs. It was disgusting .... poor guy. But he never even lifted a leg. (Probably was itchy, so he liked me poking around under there!!)

My little gelding has to have the good stuff just to get his shots. haha So he's on enough drugs to knock down an elephant and he still has to be hobbled for any kind of vet work. He's just an orney thing, so we do everything all at once, teeth, sheath, and shots. Usually he has to have a second dose after the teeth just to make sure he's fully cooperative.

We have learned the hard way to NOT twitch him. If you've ever seen a lion after you throw rocks at it, that's what the gelding is like when you twitch him. He's likely to rip that twitch clean out of your hand and beat you senseless with it shaking it off, all while sending hooves at your face.

This should be the easiest way. Have someone pick up a front leg and hold it.

My late stud was all for it, go figure. Being a stud, he dropped enough he was hardly ever dirty. My geldings have all been very modest fellows and give me the "what for" if I make a grab for their tool. So they just get done when they get teeth done. So far most have been bean free.
