I have a really nice 5 yo mare. Every now and then she wont commit the the turn on the first barrel and floats away from my hand. I have been working on using more outside leg to help her stay in the turn. Currently I run in a sherry cervi short shank with a dog bone mouth piece. When not running I typically ride in a snaffle. Any bit suggestions that may help with this problem?

That's not a bit problem... that's a heavy hand issue and she is either uncomfortable or has gotten away with it for long enough that she may need some tuning. Remember, bits aren't made for horses, they're made for people. Most pattern problems are just a reflection of a missed step in training or a soundness issue.

When thinking about bits, you can compare them to guns. The challenge lies in the hands wrapped around them.

I agree, hand issue.I had the exactly same problem with my horse at the second barrel and I didn't know what i was doing wrong. Look up some Ed Wright youtube clinic videos and study them. Watch a few and notice how he tells the riders to basically not bend their elbow at all at the turn. I can't explain it very well but it has worked wonders with me and my horse.

Do you know the links to the youtube videos you watched? I know I definitely ride to the first with a lot of bend in my elbow compared to the second and third! I wouldn't say I'm heavy handed by any means but that is something I know I do!!

If it's a heavy hand issue, your horse is probably also throwing it's head up as it floats out sideways. Maybe let your reins out a little longer and try to "guide" without yanking or pulling too much. (Saying without seeing a video of your run). If your horse is simply flexing too much, change to a 2 pc mouthpiece. Be sure your hand isn't too far down on your inside rein also. On the backside of the turn, put some pressure on your outside rein to "brace" your horse up( straighten up his body).

This is my favorite one. Definitely worth watching it all the way through.

Could it be your horse is not rating or collecting for the turn?
