All my horses are on forage, they only get grain 1-3 times a week. We have the soil testing to make sure the proper grasses grow and all of them are fat and happy.

Why do you feed grain 1-3 times a week?

Not all people have grass year round. Up here in the frozen tundra 5 months of the year you have to feed dry hay. And when you have horses that are outside in minus zero weather they are burning calories just staying warm. If you don't feed a little denser calorie food they will lose weight in bitter cold weather.

Down here, we are in a drought cycle so I understand they can't always have grass, but I feed a little grain every day to keep up a routine. I always like to learn, though, and thought there may be an interesting reason she was feeding grain 1-3 times a week.

I am not asking why she doesn't feed grain, I was wondering why she feeds it intermittently through the week. I either feed a little grain every day or no grain. We have a few horses out on pasture year round that don't get grain, only hay and grass even during the drought.

I feed mine twice a day because I want the routine so if they would ever get out they will be back to get fed. Mine is also mixed at our feed mill so I know they are getting all their daily requirements of everything. There is no right or wrong answer on feeding horses. Way too many variables.

Once upon a time, I used to feed grain only 3 x week also for the purpose of keeping them coming up to the barn (even though they didn't require extra feed). Those horses looked great on native forage.

Agree, I live down south and mine stay fat on our 100 acres, graze year round,  no harsh winters, stalled under fans in the heat of the summer days, I just make sure they get the proper nutrition, I don't have to worry about calories.

I'm so sorry this was meant to be a reply to another post, I don't know why it was put in a post by itself?!

I feed a few times a week so that I can still catch them easily, when the grass does not grow during winter we plant rye grass.
