Has anyone dealt with extensor tendon lacerations before ? My 2017 futurist hopeful did a number on her leg today and lacerated her extensor and even exposed the bone ..... Please share any insight you may have .....is there much of a chance she'll have a barrel career ?

I would be speaking to the vet, as I can't remember which ligament or tendon it is that doesn't heal and a graft needs to be done.

I would be asking about stem cells or injecting bone marrow into the tendon to accelerate healing and reduce the amount of scar tissue.

I would also be worrying about bone infection, since the bone is exposed, if it does get infected it is not fun. I would be asking for a broad spectrum antibiotic to be given for two weeks min.

Good luck

Thank goodness it isn't any worse, my heart sank when I looked at the picture of the horse in the fence

I had a similar injury to my 3 year old mare and I didn't get stitches. I kept it clean, didn't bandage it and let the air help heal it. She is not lame and has a small scar. Keep peeling the scab off the wound so proud flesh can't grow.

I had the vet out tonight she's a good local vet but ill also call chad Hewlett and delaneys tomorrow for a second opinion....and more options. My vet said shell likely be pleasure sound but not sure if barrel horse sounds. I'm hoping to get some stories from others who have dealt with similar situations. She's on an antibiotic and anti inflammitories . We are packing it and working to keep the bone moist so it doesn't die. My vet said she will likely heel bit not be able to lift that foot up quick enough to barrel race. Just the ****s ! She's a pretty special filly

I have torn deep flexor tendons, injected stem cells into one bone marrow into the other, both are perfectly sound, no scar tissue on ultrasound.

I know it is a different tendon, but with proper medical treatment they do heal well.

Also ask about special shoes, don't quote me on this but I think vets will put on a special shoe to prevent toe drag while healing.

Call Moores as well for a second or third opinion. They're expensive as heck but they know what they're talking about (well some of the vets there lol)

Bless her heart, that looks horrible. I sure hope your vets get her on the right track and she heals up completely sound.

I had a mare with a similiar catestrophic leg injury.  Her extensor tendon was involved, but not severed.  The bone was exposed and dry, but didn't sequester.  I followed the injury treatment regime from www.stepaheadfarm.com.  It was ALWAYS wrapped, with a graduated wrapping system.  She came back 100%- I ran her again at the same level of competition as before.   I have progress pics all the way to when it was all haired over.  The scar was pretty minimal, considering.  And no proud flesh, either.

Thank you for the link ! How long did it take you to heal her ?

I Don't Brag

My good, now old, rodeo mare stuck her leg through a high tensile wire And severed her below the hock. Got the vet right out and I believe her stitched the tendon together and then the skin. He told me that I would be VERY lucky if she did not blow the stitches, just from swelling alone. But this mare has always been very good at taking care of herself. Don't have stalls, so I boarded her down the street where they do have some. She was very quite in the stall and manage not to blow her stitches. When I brought her home and proceeded beyond hand walking to free lounging, if she could not get her foot flipped in time to land she would just skip that step. Within a couple of months, she was back to running barrels better than ever.

Hope you have good luck with this injury.

I had this but much worse. The extensor tendon was severed. The wound itself was healing great but unfortunately due to all the flesh lost and extremely cold temperatures the circulation below the wound was compromised and i had to put her down. From what I was told they can compensate for the extensor tendon and eventually learn how to flip the hoof foreward and can be at the least riding sound.

I just retired my horse 2 years ago at age 20. He was missing 3 inches of that tendon from a high tensile fence accident that happened when he was a yearling. He was a 2/3D horse.
