I read this on Facebook

It is with a heavy heart that I inform all of you that have prayed for our family in the last week that my niece, Lara passed away this morning. She got hurt doing what she loved best, barrel racing. She put up a good fight, but her injuries were just to severe. Please be in prayer for her mother, Lisa Belcher, Lara was her only child and for my brother Steve Dewees. He lost his other daughter, Angie several years ago, losing one child is horrible and losing two is unimaginable to me. Also Lara leaves behind a 2 year old little boy, Layton and her fiancΓ© , Corey.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone.

Beyond belief tragedy.  So sad for the family.  A great argument for keeping those gates closed at arenas if there's any way possible.  I've seen this happen several times.  If the gate is closed eventually someone can step in and stop the horse or they just run themselves out.

Honestly, I hate running to a closed gate but after my son came off and got his foot hung in the stirrup, I do agree they are usually much safer.  He was wearing a helmet, but if the gate would have been open... I really hate to think of what could have happened.

I think you've got to look at each individual facility and decide the best set up.  At a facility like this - with a short alley and then asphalt - there is NO WAY that the gate should've been left open.  It's heartbreaking that this was so preventable by closing a gate!

When will rodeos take safety seriously and address dangerous setups and ground?  Whole wreck started because her horse fell on the 3rd barrel.

^^^ This.  So many small things that contributed to this tragedy.

I do think some arenas should have closed gates. If outside the arena is gravel or asphalt then the gate should be closed. I also think even if its a open gate that someone should be ready to close it if there is a run away horse. Prayers to her and her family and may she rest in peace. This has been very heartbreaking and I know her family needs prayers right now.
