| Sorry guys, I'm going to vent a little bit. Is is just me or has Facebook Advertising for horses majorly gone down hill? It just seems like everyone is posting- even children/teenagers are posting horses for sale and most of the ads just seem like they are more for a popularity contest instead of people actually posting horses for sale? It might be because I'm a Photographer and I studied Advertising in College, but people are posting horrible sale photos and descriptions of these horses. I mean snap chat photos? Seriously! Is it that hard to take a nice conformation photo of your horse? Most phones have decent cameras nowadays! I think it is really frustrating for sellers who actually put effort in their advertisements and want/need to sell their horse. It's annoying to have these poorly thought-out ads flooding the group pages. I personally just skip through those ads without even looking at the horse. Has anyone else noticed this? Maybe I should just delete some of the For Sale groups! I guess one positive thing is it is easy entertainment

Location: SE KS | I agree, some of the photos are horrible.
However, my problem with getting a "decent" photo, which is still not as good as could be, is because I have no one to hold the horse or stand them up!!! When I do get, usually husband or son to help, which is usually just the same as no help, the pictures are just as bad. I'm no photographer by any means, but I have trouble getting a "decent" photo!!! |

Sorry that made me laugh. You are right though, some just can't seem to get them standing so a decent photo can be taken. Sometimes it's easier to just put them on the walker and take some pics...for me anyways. I've seen pics even here that I by pass cause of the pics taken. |

Yes, I usually have my mom and sister trying to help! I definitely know the trouble! Some horses are not at all easy to photograph! |

Location: Desert Land | I think there is an art to advetising/selling horses. I try to be very posfessional in my ads and include any useful information. I always have...even when I was 15 and sold my first horse.
What I really have a problem with is when people respond to my ads asking me questions that would have been answered had they actually read my ad. |

| What gets me is the "today only" price, do people really fall for that?? I guarantee that if the horse is still available the next day they would take your $$. |

| I am also amazed... I hate the random pasture pictures. Walking towards them, head looks huge, you have half a shoulder, maybe 3 legs visable. I just inquired on a paint horse and asked for more pictures and they were just as bad as the ones in her ad.
I do think you can get much better pictures just tying them up. Might take a few tries but it would be a much better option than a lot of the ones I see. Plus I learned the hard way when someone send me zero pictures of it tied. Said it tied, drove to OK and it didnt tie.

Its funny that you say that. I sell horses from time to time, and sometimes for other people. But Every once in a while, I will put a "On Sale for this week only" because it does get more attention and I only do that if it is a drastic price drop. And it has worked very well, sold the last 2 within the week. (in one case I did it because I honestly believed the seller would back out within a week.) But I understand your point. |

It drives me crazy too! When I sell a horse, i take at lease 30-40 pictures and then sit down and delete the ones that dont look good! And end up with 3-4 really good ones and those are what I go with. It also helps to know how to take a picture. Im not a photographer by any means, but I have been taking pictures of horses for long enough to know not to take a picture "head on"! lol |

| I remember having to stand up so many horses for sale pictures for trainers over the years.
I'm a grown up and I want to deal with grown ups, so honestly if the ad sounds like it was written by a 12 year old, unless I REALLY see something I like, I'll pass.
Same goes for selling a horse - I've had mine advertised on and off on a few FB pages and I'll stalk a person who comments if I think they're 12 years old to see how seriously I want to take them.
The thing that annoys me the most is when you get down to communicating with someone and they can't type in proper English or feel the need to put "LOL" into sentences all over the place.
I did not realize that the fact that you only currently have half of what I'm asking for horse on hand lol, and you hope I still have him when you get the rest lol, or what is my "rock bottom" number lol was so gosh darn funny... |

Same here, I tie them to the fence or trailer and take a crap ton of shots to get a handful of decent ones. If you pull their tail enough times, they will eventually stand on all 4 feet long enough to snap a few.
I got my son to video me on a mare I was selling a couple of years ago because my husband was never home during daylight hours. He was 9. He made fart noises and cracked himself up the entire time. Thank goodness for the ability to edit out sound. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Well I had my friend come out to help me take pictures. They are super hairy, will be 1 in May but they go to pasture before that if they are still unsold. I can't get anyone to get serious. I'm not asking a crazy amount, but this is one of the neatest fillies we have raised so I won't give her away. And you can't beat her name lol. | She looks like a real nice filly and your price seems reasonable to me. There's a lot of ads for young ones. I wonder if anybody is having much luck selling theirs. Seems like most people only want to pay much for one that's riding. |

 Take a Picture

| I saw on on craigslist the other day and the pics were terrible but the questionable part were the papers. They showed the horse to be AQHA and Palomino horse breeders registered and the horse was BROWN. The Palomino registry is a color registry-- PERIOD. Made me wonder if the horse even had the correct papers. I could not see the papers well enough to see on the AQHA pares if it was registered as a palomino. |

Location: SW North Dakota | A decent picture is the best time (or money) you can ever spend. It's your "first impression" in many cases. It isn't too hard to take them, especially if you have a good helper and some sunshine. Stand the horse so the sun is perfectly perpendicular to the horse. If you are using a cell phone or a point and shoot camera, step back far enough to help eliminate distortion. Aim your camera right behind the elbow of the horse, making sure your camera is exactly parrallel to the horse. TRy to set both outside legs toward the middle of the horse and both nearside legs "outside" without having them wadded up or stretched out. Now you can see all 4 legs and feet (mow the grass, or stand them on a solid surface when possible). This is your basic side angle confirmation shot. The horses' heads and necks look best if you can tip to face toward you just so you can see the eye "bump" of the off side eye. (get another helper with a squeaky dog toy or a mirror) IMO, this shot should be included on every sale ad. Candids don't really turn me off, unless they are useless selfies with only the horse's distorted face and the owner's face. Like others have said, bad photos do NO GOOD in selling your horse most of the time- unless you've caught them doing something really spectacular (like walking up to a lion or something). I'm kinda passionate about this subject. $200 for a professional photo is probably the best money you'll ever spend. Attached are a couple examples... The head shot I'd only use as a second photo. The horses included are a mixed bag- the grey is a kids' horse, a broodmare and a pretty expensive stallion. The head shot is one of our ranch horses.

| OP, you are so right. One of the pages I follow is "barrel racing tack/horse swap". It is HORRIBLE!! The other day a girl had a "1D horse for sale, $1000". The video showed a horse that couldnt have been more than green broke, much less experience on the pattern as it went almost everywhere but around the barrel. A friend of mine posted a well bred started prospect the other day and the tire kicking and silly questions were almost too much. I realize there are a lot of young people on there. A lot of arguing takes place between the posters as well.  I would be very reluctant to post a horse for sale on that site for those reasons.
