Hello, I am trying to find a good futon mattress for my horse trailer. I have never used futon mattresses before so I have a few questions on what to buy. First, I want a thinner type of a mattress so it doesnt take away head room in my living quarters. With futon mattresses, am I better off getting an all foam one wrapped in cotton or a innerspring one? Also Are they normally the thickness they say they are? Are they really 6 or 8 inches thick or do they only "loft" that high and are really thinner for both the foam or the innerspring? Which brands have you had luck with and what thickness?

I always found the futon mattresses of my college days be lumpy and uncomfortable.

Wayfair and overstock have various memory foam mattresses that are pretty affordable. I'm going to see how comfortable the stock mattress in my new trailer is, but probably go with memory foam

We tried a futon mattress in our old steel trailer, and I hated it! Lumpy, and I could feel all the buttons on it.... so after 2 nights I ended up ordering a memory foam mattress from Wallie World and put that on top of the futon mattress. It helped a lot.
I never had a problem of the memory foam one being hard as a rock. But we did have insulation sheets on top of the carpet that was already in the nose and put the mattresses on top of that.

The good thing about the memory foam ones is that they come in different thicknesses and so you can choose one to accommodate the space you have.

I kind of like the firmness of the cold memory foam, it's like melting into a cloud as your body temp warms it up...

There's ones with gel in them too, those will get firmer

I'm with OhMx on the air mattress.  I sleep on a Sleep Number air mattress in my trailer.  I have slept on air mattresses for decades and sure don't care to sleep on anything else.  I always have a memory foam on top as they are warm and so comfy.

We have this foam mattress from Walmart, although I think ours is only 4" thick? They come in all kinds of thicknesses so you can figure out just how much headroom you'll need. I wish we would've maybe gone a little thicker, but we also don't have much headroom to spare.

ETA I haven't had problems with mine being hard when it's cold :)
