So I posted about two weeks back saying the vet said my horse fractured his splint bone in a hind leg and I was expecting surgery to take it out. Update... Go back to the vet X-ray again and now can't find the fracture but say they can see the cannon bone in bruised. Horse is almost 100% sound I would say. So now what? Any advice?

When they found cannon bone bruising (distal end I think) in California Chrome's legs they turned him out for about 100 days.

I have heard that if the fracture is in a specific spot, it is very hard to see via xray.

Your vet may have been lucky the first time, and the second time the horse was standing differently. Or the horses body (tendons ligaments) brought the splint back into alignment so the xray didn't show it.

i would still be giving the horse the 6 weeks off then take back for a reassessment

There is an organic mushroom supplement called Mushroom Matrix MRM. It aids in recovery of horses. I have used it with wonderful results.

It's been 3 weeks since it happened. The vet said what he thinks happened is there was too much inflammation to see clearly the first time (it was a younger vet at his clinic that did the first X-rays) once the inflammation was gone now he can't find the fracture. We also ultra sounded the leg and all the tendons and ligaments look great he said and what he could see of the split bone all looks good. The horse is sound and no swelling on the leg so guess I'm kind of at a loss of what to do for the next 2 weeks until his recheck? The vet said start riding him and we will recheck. Can I do any damage if all the tendons are good and the bone is just bruised?

Id leave him alone for awhile...but thats just my opinion...rather give it to much time and let him heal completly rather than rush things and have him really get hurt......m

I know in humans a bruised bone is worse then a break for pain, as the pain in a bruise lasts longer.

If the tendons and ligaments look good, the splint looks good, and the cannon bone is not fractured I would ride him
