this is a first for me.

I am having a Canadian health cert done and all that jazz. What is the safest payment method?

Also looking for peeps headed north to maybe meet the buyer in or around ND

When I have bought horses from the states, I wired the money directly into their account, and I believe it takes a week for the U.S. Person to get it possibly 2 weeks.

Need brand inspection, health certificate, coggins. Someone will also need to contact the boarder to make sure there are no restrictions on the state the horse is coming from.

Also the person in Canada is going to have to get a broker.

Check with Diamond Spur Transport out of Bozeman MT. She goes all over the US and in and out of Canada a lot. She has a great reputation.

If the horse is coming from a brand state you need a brand inspection, health and coggins (within 3 months I believe) and you must make check the import list to make sure the horse isn't from a quarantine state, as well as confirm with a shipper the horse will not be travelling through a quarantine state.

Depending on where the horse is going and whether it is a mare, gelding, or stallion, the buyer will have to pay tax (at minimum 5% GST) on the purchase of the horse as well as any broker fees (unless they meet the horse in the US and import it in themselves).

In terms of sending money I have paid for horses by PayPal, Wire transfer, or Money Order (Western Union).

I sold a mare to Canada once. She wired the money.
Have your health papers in order as well as a professional bill of sale/receipt due to their taxes.

The wire transfer seems like the best way to go but giving my acct # out gives me the creeps.

They also need name phone number, address, bank name address and phone number for a wire transfer

The banking information you give is the exact same information any person could find on the bottom of a cheque you've written :)

Have your bank contact their bank...when I worked in the bank we had customers request we do that for transactions into the USA.

good luck

I was the same way when I sold a saddle to a lady in Canada. She gave me her bank's phone number and I called them and gave them my account information. But now I feel kind of silly after reading the other post, I never thought about all of the info being on a check already

I still think it's a fine practice to provide wiring instructions to their financial institution rather to them personally. No harm in doing so and could help prevent any shenanigans with your information.  Plus if you are expecting a wire, you would never be providing them with a check anyway.  They don't need to know your account #.

Even if you provide it directly to the bank the person sending the funds will have a copy of the information you provide.

The person sending the funds has to go into the bank and either provide the information, or have the person provide the information for direct entry into the bank, and then they print off the information and have you review and sign it before sending the transfer. You then get a copy of the wire transfer which includes all the info.

We purchased a mare out of Montana a few years back. We sent a money order via mail/courier. Since she was just in Montana the seller brought her across herself which was much less of a hassle than a hauler doing so. I believe she got health papers as she would for coming across to compete, which is not really the most legal way to do it but saved everyone a few bucks. That wouldnt work if a hauler had brought her across however.
