Elite Veteran Posts: 901 Location: The South	Mavers has scratches. Severely on his rear legs and I have been so busy with work and Sophia I flat didn't catch them until the barrel race today. All I could find in the trailer to start treatment was scarlet oil so he looked a bit murderous... But they go all the way around on the back feet. I am seriously considering clipping his lower legs to the knee/hock so that I can rinse his legs and treat them easier. But I live in an extremely wet environment and I've heard that can be counter productive and make it worse. I clipped the front just behind the fetlock and below the ergot when he came down with them earlier this winter. Healed up in a week and the hair grew back somewhat. But he is bald on the back and has such long hair on his lower legs I'm thinking I should just clip it all and deal with rinsing daily/when I ride in mud. Thoughts? Ms. Poutability Posts: 2362 Location: In my own world	I have no idea on the clipping. Can't see how it would hurt. Also I've seen on FB s product called "hay where's that blue stuff". Supposed to work good on scratches!!

Owner of a ratting catting machine Posts: 2258	Clip. Wash with Dawn dishsoap, gentle enough for baby ducks, gentle enough for scratches. Rinse well. Wrap with Desitin Extra Strength for five or six days, slather it on. The first 24 hours you'll be able to peel the worst of the scabs off. Then use a mixture of Desitin and Neosporin for five or six days. Start five days of Penecillin. Then just keep slathered up in Desitin Extra Strength and as dry as possible. Tried and true.

Not Afraid to Work Posts: 4717	I also agree with clipping. My gelding gets them bad!!!! I tried every trick in the book but the only think thats cleared them up was the concoction from the vet. It wasnt too expensive and you get a lot of it. I know it was dmso in it but I cant remember the rest of the ingredients.

Elite Veteran Posts: 929	Yes, clip with as close a blade as you can (#40 surgical is great for this.) Scrub with Dawn or Betadine scrub and then apply desitin and wrap legs to keep dirt off. Repeat daily until gone. Then keep dry and clean. Scratches suck. Poor horse.

Stinky Cat Owner Posts: 4097 Location: Oregon	I think I’m dealing with scratches for the first time… As well as an abcess at the same time. Are the scratches scab like? Painful? His leg has also been swelling. He was seen by the vet for the abcess and is on antibiotics, and the vet will be coming back out since the swelling hasn’t gone down, as well as this new scabby like crap.
