I have a friend whose dog was poisoned yesterday. The tests came back positive for marijuana. He had some small seizures and now goes into total panic mode when she crates him so she can go to work. He panics when she leaves the room and now seems to have forgotten what sit means and drinks out of the toilet which he never did before. Has anyone dealt with this or something similar?

When did they start testing dogs for marijuana as a possible poison? Better check your stash!!!!

was dog tortured? Could it be there was another type poison as well , I cant believe a dog would eat that much pot enough to cause those issues but I may be wrong.

Well.... and I'm chuckling writing this.... My friend had a dog that ate marijuana muffins before. Little snake got them out of my friend's bag and ate all three of them. Luckily he was a big dog and he was just high as a kite for a few days, but he never got sick from it. Just slept it off mostly.

The vet said marijuana. He had a bad reaction to it I guess. She got home from work and he was really upset and frantic. I understand the chuckling. I kinda am too but she is really upset about her dog. I guess he had a bad trip. I am wondering if he is feeding off her being so upset. She is pretty high strung and this has freaked her out.

It sounds to me like the dog got into her stash and that's how she knows.

Q. Can my veterinarian use an over-the-counter drug test (for humans) to test if my dog was poisoned with marijuana?

A. Over-the-counter human urine drug screening tests have been used to help diagnose dogs with marijuana exposure; however, the success rate is highly inconsistent and false negatives occur. With these drug screening tests, a positive THC result is consistent with marijuana poisoning, while a negative result does not conclusively rule out poisoning.

My son took her and the dog to an animal emergency clinic so I know a vet looked at the dog and said he tested positive for THC. I don't know how the vet tested the dog. All I wanted to know was if anyone had this happen and if anyone had any ideas on how to help the dog with his apparently new behavior problems.

My suggestion is wait for him to come off his high and see if he returns to normal behavior. Depending on how much he ate... which is where your friend needs to be honest about how much was in their stash... will determine how long he trips. If he only ate a pot brownie worth, he should be fine in a day or so, but a whole bag full will probably be a week or so before it's entirely out of his system - this could also be why he is so sick if he ate that much.

By the way, I wasn't chuckling at your friend's dog, I was laughing at our own situation with the pot muffins. Because it's been years now and we look back and can laugh about no harm done.

Thank you! I understood the chuckling part. I kinda did, too, until I realized she is making it worse and I just was hoping some one could give something to take back to her to settle her down, which you did. I will tell her this and hope she is smart enough to hide it better. No way this was from some one throwing a roach in her back yard, I agree.

Someone did that to my dog too but after the "high" she was fine. Maybe the dog you're talking about had more of it.

Had a horse eat several pot plants, wild(known as ditch weed around the ranch), and he was out of it for 3 days... looked like he had rabies, white foam dripping out of it's mouth, kept laying down(even in the horse trailer while moving), wobbly. Took all food away from him, only water, and waited until it wore off!

Never had a dog ingest any but I bet if he consumed enough of it, it would make him sick. I doubt someone intentionally tried to poison the dog with pot, they surely would have used something cheaper.

I know people can have different reactions to pot. Some people chill out, others get paranoid. I'm sure animals are the same way. I hope he's ok after a few days.

If it was just yesterday, she needs to give it more time.  Let it get out of his system and spend some time with him and regain his security.

Would activated charcoal work at all in this case, or animal element detox?

Truthfully, Marijuana itself is not dangerous. It shouldn't kill the dog, unless they ate a LOT of pot (more than any one person should have in their house.) or the pot was also lined with something else (chemicals from when it was being grown or another drug), so drastic measures like this really wouldn't be necessary.

I know the vet kept him over night. I had not thought about some Amimal Element. If still had some, I bet that would have helped. As soon as I get an update I'll post . I have been gone all day. I did give her some essential oils to use. I told her to just put a drop of grounding and a drop of peace and calming on a wash cloth and place it right in front of his crate.
