| My horses blankets are in desperate need of cleaning, they smell awful and it's about time to put them up for the year. I won't use my washing machine in the house and I'm sure I'd get busted going to the laundromat with those big dirty smelly blankets. I was wondering if I could hang them up on my fence and take the water hose and some detergent to them and let them air dry? |

| I may not be of much help, but I wash our horse blankets in the washer 1x a year before I put them up.
To be honest it has not had a negative impact on my machine. I just brush off excess dirt throw them in and air dry. Washer is A'OK.

Location: Windoming | I always take mine to the laundromat. They have "greaser" machines specifically for items they don't want mixed up with other people's finer stuff............. |

| I go to the laundromat and use the big commercial size washers - no soap. And then I run another empty cycle through to be courteous.

This.
I throw them all into a tote box to take home and hang on fence to dry. |

So no detergents? And air dry? I thought I read detergents will mess up the water proofing ?? |

Location: WI | I use an industrial washing machine at the barn, with regular detergent. Before we had that, I would take them to the laundormat. Try to go on off-peak hours, lol. The waterproofing holds pretty well. |

I use soap, but then I spray the water proofing stuff back on them after they dry. My blankets last for years, even with them wearing them 6 months out of the year. |

Location: In the Hills of Texas | I wash mine several times during the season at home as I do all of my blankets, boots etc. The manure and urine will mess up the fabric. I've had some blankets that are over 20 years old and are still in good shape. I've rewaterproofed just a few times. |

| We take all of ours to the laundry mat..... They have never said a word to us before, and they see us come in there quite often. One of the dryers did melt the straps on one of our cheap blankets though.... had it set on low, but it only had a high setting apparently. |

| If you plan on taking them to a laundromat, call first and ask if they have a problem with washing your horse blankets. You can offer to run an empty washer with bleach and soap to be courteous. Also brush off as much hair and mud off the blankets before you go. NEVER use a dryer, hang them to air dry (they can shrink and some melting of some fabrics can occur).
I have done all the above and have never been banned or turned down. I like using the triple load/extractor for washing my blankets. |

| I send my blankets to www.totallyhorsesonline.com.
They wash and repair my blankets and they come back looking new every time and also are put in a storage bag to store. They will even send you a bag to mail your blanket in. They do an awesome job.
Check out their website. |
