Location: Probably On the Road to the Next Barrel Race! | That is a great cross...I have a granddaughter of Peptoboonsmall and CD Olena. She's wicked quick in a turn, and hunts a first like no other, but she is simply getting outrun by the 1d horses, even with a perfect pattern. I'm older (56), so I come from an era that saw tons of cow horses running barrels, before it was so popular to train horses that were bred to run. They are generally awesome horses, quick, quick to train n they stay pretty solid over time (ie, don't tend to be as fragile minded). However, though I have seen n run with some great cowbred horses when I was younger, I will say that, simply put, nowdays they'll usually get outrun by the running bred horse. So if you are happy with a great, barrel hunting, pretty turning, top of 2d horse, you've probably got one you will love. Don't let my opinion limit you; yours may be the next NFR qualifier, but the odds for top dog go to the running breds. Good luck! |

Agree 100% in most cases they get outrun but every once in awhile you will get a freak lol I love them because they catch on super fast and tend to stay very solid. |

| My little horse is Dual Pep and Haidas Little Pep bred. Both sire (Rey Dual) and dam have NCHA earnings.
I'm hoping he's the freak. He was near the top of the 3D yesterday in rodeo company and it was only his 5th or 6th out since starting him on the pattern in late November and I'm not really pushing him hard yet. He is super ratey and has a natural turn - you don't really have to guess on when to stop kicking he can downshift so fast just kick until you want to turn.
I know some folks on here don't like the Peppy San Badger bred but he is our second, the fiance's good rope horse is PSB too. Smart, athletic, and they both want to go work and both of them would fall over before they'd quit on you. Quirky at times, but the good ones are usually. |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | Bought a Doc O Dynamite daughter out of a Peppy San Badger daughter who was out of a Doc O Lena daughter. I'd never had much experience with this breeding. She was sore on the front from years of roping. We literally loved riding her. She let my inexperienced niece build confidence around the barrels. We bred her to El Scorcho. A colt was born in January and he is perfect. Can not wait to see what he does for us. She's being bred again to him again. They may not have the speed, but I believe they can be bred to speed and can turn a wickedly good barrel. Good luck :) |

| Cow breed or a strong cow / run cross is all I ride.
Both my broodmares are cutting breed but bigger style mares, both are out of daughters of freckles playboy by sons of peoptoboonsmal. I never have rode the sorrel (her mare lines are docs hickorey top and bottom) as she was injured in a fence and has tendon damage. But she is awesome, and her foals can really move.
My roan my spoonful daughter shes an increadible horse. She can really get out and run, and just full of class.
My little brown mare is very very quick in her turns and can really scoot when she needs to, she has the hip to push AND the sholders to pull her self forward. And her daughter I am working with now I have very high hopes for, if I ever get a chance to get to some races lol. She had a wee bit of run way back in her dads lines.
With anything it really comes down to structure, a ton of cowbred horses are bulit to be fast and explosive, you got to be able to really move out on cattle sometimes. And they should be able to really sit down and work/turn. It is just my preference I much pefer my cow bred horses. I just love them. |

Location: Where I am happiest | The most forwardly placed, free running, most quickest footed horse we have EVER owned was by Topsails Reinmaker out of a Holidoc daughter out of a Doc Olena daughter. We sadly lost her last fall to Potomac Horse Fever. She was only 5. :( |

I have one of the freaks LOL. He's all cutting bred and short but boy can his little legs MOVE haha. Now if only I could ride him. If I do my part, we're in the money. Sometimes he's still there even when I forget how to ride.
He's got me trying to shed a few pounds, he runs so fast and turns so hard, it's hard to keep myself in the middle after gaining about 30 pounds I'm not used to carrying. I started riding bareback this week, just walking, to work on my balance. |

Location: North Dakota | My mare is a daughter of San Jo Lena out of a daughter of Colonel Freckles. She has an attitude and thinks she owns the world but she is sane and LOVES to work. She really took to barrels after a being a cutting horse, team penning horse and a broodmare throughout her first 10 years of life before I bought her. From what I have noticed with my mare, is she takes to things extremely fast and just seems to have the ability to do anything. I think it comes from how extremely broke cutting horses are from the start. They know how to use their bodies which adds to their athletic ability. I love that fact that she walks calmly to the gate, does her job and walks calmly out. I think I will always run a cutting/cowbred horse in the future. I have just come to really enjoy it.  |

| Friend of mine runs a Freckles Playboy mare who is wicked quick and every time she runs a pattern, it looks effortless. She's super impressive to watch. She likely will clock 2D against tough tough competition but shes a cool mare. I rode a lot of Docs Prescription horses growing up and they all were 1D horses in their prime. None of them over 14.2 but they clocked. And they lasted physically. |

| I just bought a 3 year old by a prominent cutting sire (offspring with $1.5M in earnings) out of a Dash Ta Fame mare. I am pretty excited about the cross. I think the cow/run crosses make really good minded, gritty horses. I would never hesitate to buy cow bred. |

Location: When you hit the middle of nowhere .. Keep driving | I have a 4 year old by my cow stud (peppy San badger/ docs hotrodder breeding) and out of a givemealickin/ docs Zinfandel mare. She's got a short choppy stride but is quick and sure footed, a fast learner but not super fast. My holland ease daughter is in foal to the stud now and I am likely keeping it. Her last foals were tanks built like him on legs that could go. I like the cow with some run to them for myself. |

Couldn't say enough good things about her. LOVE cow bred horses. We might not be the fastest, but she sure is a blast to ride.

I love this one so much I bought her dam with a filly at side and bred back the same way because I couldn't get her bought last year.
Then I was finally able to buy this one last month. She has been hauled for one year and has clocked a half a second off just cruising. I'm praying I can learn to ride her and get into the 1D and 2D by the end of the year. She is a big mare that stands 15hh and 4ft wide. She is flat kneed, long strided, and level headed. It's all about the build. You've got to have power, quickness, stride, and above all, heart!
