| My good gelding has a mysterious lameness that was diagnosed as 'clinical heel pain' classical signs of navicular. I wont settle with that. Xrays are clean, he has some side bone, but 3 vets said not enough to make him lame, he doesn't hoof test at all, flexion tests are good. Not lame on straight, but head bobbing on circle to right and shoulder in, head out to the left.
I was talking to a vet the other day and she said it sounds like something similar to a sciatic problem in humans. She dummied the terminology down for me.. but it went something like this: It is a nerve that runs down between the shoulder blades that cutters, barrel and jumpers get more than other disiplines because of the front end and turning impact. When the nerve gets irritated, pinched etc it will give these exact symptoms. She said sometimes it is repairable, other times, not.
She is coming out at the end of April to look at him.
But, has anyone heard of this or dealt with it and what was the outcome? | |

Location: Claremore, OK | It doesn't take much of a sidebone to be painful for a horse, especially if it's in an active phase. It won't show up with hoof testers but it will definitely show up just like you described...when the horse lands on it on a hard surface, in a circle.
Carrying his head to the outside of a circle usually indicates foot soreness, since he's trying not to load the inside foot. Your vet could block the sidebone or block from the pastern down and see if he improves. | |

| I used to stick with colts out of a certain stud a couple had this very thing, what worked best for me was a good farrier i would soak in hot hot Epsom salts two hours later bucket of ice water, magnetic bell boots,isoxsuprine and a cow aspirin, previ ox and keeping up with injection s i also play around with acupressure and have a pain x i did the points for sore feet and shoulders watched my pens tried to run on good ground good luck and magic cushion they are a lot of work every evening i was doing something on theses horses. Good luck i am interested on what the vet says about the nerve please let me know, i avoid these bloodlines now, and now I'm dealing with asymmetrical shoulders...always something | |

| I have had him blocked for the back 3/4 of the hoof, but will get them to do the whole hoof. It didn't make him any more sound with the back 3/4 done.
I had a chiro up for my other horse today and got them to take a peek at this guy. She said he has so much going on that no wonder he is 'gibley' lots of long term, which makes sense as this is a couple years going on now. I asked her if she had time for him today, but she said with the vet already booked that she would rather the vet see what the long and short term issues are with the whole horse instead of fixing some and not everything. She would like a diagnosis that she can use as a guideline by the vet first.
