Hello,

I have never dealt with ulcers and am curious if one of my mares possibly has them. I have bought hay from the same grower the last three years that I have had her and she is usually a really good eater. I have noticed that she is leaving more and more stems and just picking out the good stuff. She use to never be a "hot" mare but the last several months her attitude has become hot and just cranky off and on. She is starting to flip her nose out randomly, shakes her head, and just plain gets mad for what seems to be no reason. The last few days when I have rode her she gets herself so worked up (just trying to walk and trot) that she becomes drenched with sweat. She has had her teeth done, massage therapy, chiropractic, lamness exams and there hasn't been any issues major issues.

I did send her out for some training a while back so I'm not sure if the hotness/crankiness could be related to the extra focus on barrels and she just maybe isn't handling the pressure as well or the fact she is eating more of the greens and less of the stems and is just getting hot from her hay. I do a lot of riding away from the barrels too and am not just working her on the barrels or fast work all the time.

She use to be such a delight to be around and now she is harder to catch, crabby, and isn't working as well.

I'm considering having her scoped but don't know much about ulcers so I wanted to get some opinions if I am even in the right direction of thinking or if anyone has any other ideas.

Also if you think it could be ulcers, is there a supplement that you like that can help if she does have them and help prevent them in the future that you like?

Thank you all!

There are points to check for ulcers. Go to DePaulo on you tube. But fro. What you described it does sound like ulcers. What are you feeding? I would go.to.Walmart and get some Aloe Vera juice . Give 30 ccs before you feed. 15 to 30 minutes. It will help calm the stomach. I have a ulcer prone horse. I feed Tribute Ultra Kalm, Alfalfa and Timothy Hay. I add Vitalize High Performance. I have not had a ulcer issue since I have started feeding it.

Thank you so much for the comment and suggestions. I do feed alfalfa so I know it is a hotter feed but haven't had issues before. She does get a little grain with her supplements but that amount hasn't changed either.

I would put her on THE GastroPLUS. This supplement really changed my geldings life. She could have gotten stressed when she was sent out for some training. Mine used to get ulcers whenever I changed stalls with him. So I keep him on the GastroPLUS and it works wonders.

Thank you very much. It sounds like that is one of the best options. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
